Hi,

I'm having problems with my R5 + 70-200mm combination. I'm shooting indoor sports (in a good lighting) and usually before the last period the camera starts to act up. The focus gets blurry and pressing the focus button no longer does anything. Focus/finder gives a red square at the edges of the screen and stops working, it kind of gets stuck trying to find the right focus. I tried to take the batteries off and cool down the camera between periods but it's seems to have zero affect.

I usually just give up and change the lens but it would be nice to shoot with a lens that gives the best pictures instead of having to change your entire shooting style because of a problem. I'm not entirely sure if this problem started after I updated my camera to the latest software version.

I own this lens with a different camera the EOS 5D Mark IV. When does it fail to AF. Usually sports are in dim lighting even indoor sports can be challenging. I’ll ping my colleague Rodger who does sports with the same lens. I’ll also ping my colleague Trevor who has the same or similar set up as you.

I agree with Rick that you should enable lens drive when AF is impossible BUT this does sound like either a hardware failure or a software issue since it sounds like it is consistently having this issue. Next time it does this, try manually focusing and then see if AF starts working again.

I am still using DSLR (1DX III bodies) and the only time I have seen anything remotely similar to this was when my EF 400 f2.8 IS II had one of its focus stop buttons stick on and the 70-200 f2.8 doesn't have this feature.

If you are using BBF, try switching to the classic setup (AF and shutter release from main shutter release button) and see if the failure with time no longer occurs.

I have never been a fan of BBF for sports because I use multiple cameras and often switch during the same play so any extra time locating fingers on the different body is no good. I do have the AF button programmed as AF stop so on the rare occasion when I want to freeze focus and reframe, I use that process. But for the way I shoot sports I much prefer the classic single button setup for both focus and release/capture.

Check your AF drive setting as Rick shows above.
My R10 does something similar at times. I found re-centering the focus point (press multi controller in) completely fixes it.

Soooo.. first of all thanks for the replies!

After trying all the tricks in the book, I took the lens to a professional and the store said that they need to fix the autofocus mechanism and change the frame/body of the lens, cause it's crooked.

And after intense - fatherly and gently - interrogation, my kid confessed that he had dropped ("just a little") my camera while playing with it. So, expensive repair ahead..
