Hi, just got my Canon EOS R10 Mirrorless Camera with RF-S 18-45 f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens. I have been mostly iPhone camera user and thought to tip my toes with starter mirrorless camera. I bought this package as I had a very good deal.

What is the best way to:

(1) Get to speed on the current setup I bought. Any online classes or videos?

(2) What is the minimal lenses I need to get a good set of photos. I mostly do indoor, social, or limited outdoor photography

(3) Do I need to update software before I start using this? The set comes with no manual.

Thanks

Greetings,

More helpful into to compliment kvbarkley's post 🙂

Latest downloads and software for your R10.

Canon Support for EOS R10 | Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Firmware v1.6.0 was released 10/24.

Firmware Version 1.6.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:1. Adds the ability to select [WPA2] and [WPA3] as a secured protocol.2. Adds support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI).3. The following issues have been fixed.　3-1. Fixes an issue, in which when SPEEDLITE EL-5, EL-10 is attached, the "Accessory unavailable status" message may be displayed when restarting after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off. (Only occurs with firmware Ver.1.5.0)　3-2. Fixes an issue, in which when performing shooting in high-speed continuous shooting + mode with the [Highlight Tone Priority] option set to [ON], focus may not be achieved when certain ISO speed settings are used.

You can download the latest user guide for your camera as well. The nice thing about Canon is that they update their user guides as new feature enhancements are added to their cameras via firmware. Electronic copies are portable and fully key word searchable.

For now, I would suggest getting to know your new camera. This will put you in a better position to make a future lens choice. Your R10 is a great camera, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

You can download the R10 manual from canon online.
But i'm almost reluctant to say you should read it all because camera manuals these days are incredibly complicated.Definitely read the first sections so you know which parts of the camera are where.
After that it's best to search youtube for 'R10 setup' or 'beginner photographer' videos. Those will get you going with the bare minimum of fuss.Your lens will do fine for what you need.In future you might want a large aperture lens to get more arty shots,or a long lens if you need to bring something distant closer.
Keep in mind that proper cameras often don't make things easy for us like phone cameras do.They can do some things *far* better but you have to learn about them to get those results. All the best!

Thanks all. I was able to update the software, install CC for xfer of photos, read manual for easy tips. I took many photos in the house one evening and thought the photo quality was not any better then my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I Just have the basic RF-S 18-45 f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens that came with R10. Am I doing something wrong? The file sizes are large. Photos were in auto mode, nothing fancy. Same from both cameras - in one zoom with fingers and with R10 focus/zoom with twisting the lens.

Yes phones can do some things really well.Like i mentioned previously your camera will excel when doing tricky stuff.
Some advantages off the top of my head - i'm sure others can add many more: Very low light (tripod needed),bringing distant things close (tele lens needed),deliberate motion blur, exact lighting control(e.g in a studio), image quality over a wider range of conditions, vastly better focus control (in sports for example,or choosing a specific person in a moving crowd).
It may be a good idea to do a google image search for the type of photography you like. That can give you great ideas or styles to aim for

Greetings praderp2,

I did not see a response to a question you posted up above. Like your camera, some lenses get firmware updates as well. These updates are performed in a similar manner to how you upgrade your camera's firmware.

You do this by copying the lens firmware file to your SD card and updating with the lens attached to the camera. Your lens has a support portal just like your camera. Software updates and its manual are available to download there.

I don't see any lens firmware updates for the RF-S 18-45. It's important to register your products as Canon will send notifications for firmware updates if and when they are available.

I also saw you mention fingers in some of your photos. This is a common error with new photographers and has to do with technique.

Instead of operating the lens with your thumb at the bottom and index finger at the top, rotate your hand and place your hand underneath the lens (like a cradle), with your thumb at the 9:00 position and your fingers at 3:00 position. This will enure fingers don't drop into the lenses field of view. This is a bad habit to develop and something you should stop doing immediately. Even though it can't happen with long lenses, it's important to practice consistency in your technique. 😀

I checked and there was no firmware update. I Did try taking more photos and it seems this is not the camera for me, due to nature of photos I take - indoor, outdoor for small parties, landmarks photos when traveling. I think I will put it on sale. Is there a for sale forum on this group?
