I have seen the same with other RAW + JPG pairs when images are viewed in the Window Photos App. This latest version automatically "enhances" images and in many cases I have tried it darkens RAW images. It's quite noticeable, yet if you use the Canon DPP software to browse the same folder of images the RAW + JPG pairs look the same.

Hi everyone. I photo stuff up close for an auction company and I am having the absolute hardest time getting the colors right on some of the stuff I photo. I am using a Canon Rebel T7, then using their EOS utility 3 software to be able to view what I'm shooting on my computer. I'm shooting in raw mode and everything comes out in a .CR2 file until I start doing any editing to it. I haven't tried the latest version of PS that just came out, but I'm running the previous one.

I'm sorry, I'm a novice at all of this stuff. Any help I really, really appreciate. Thank you.

Hi Adam:
RAW will look dull and uninspiring. Normally one is expected to then do the appropriate colour matching in post production, you would then save the finished image as a JPG, TIF or PNG file - depending on your needs. A good idea is to get a colour card (they are available on-line from many outlets) and take a shot with that in the image before you photograph the actual items. That way, you can get your colour tones etc. calibrated.

Thank you very much Trevor. Yes, I do do a lot of post editing work and I'm trying to cut down on that a bit. So a color card is what I should be looking for I guess. And does that work almost like just taking a picture of a white piece of paper to get the white balance correct?

In principle, yes. But you get a much wider reference to compare and correct colours to a far greater extent.

Try shooting in jpeg and RAW to compare the two. When I compare the two side by side, the RAW photo darkens after a couple of seconds which doesn't show the colors same as the jpeg photo.

Let us know what you discover for the information.
