EOS 6D Mk ii & EL-5 flash - flash won't fire

I know I must be doing something silly but I cannot get my EL-5 flash to fire at all in any mode. The external speedlite control Flash firing option is greyed out in the menu & when selected feeds back "Flash Firing restricted by.... shutter mode". What does this mean & what should I do? Thankyou.

Is it possible you have selected a shutter speed above the camera's flash synch range? If so try setting a manual shutter speed of 1/60 or 1/125 of a second. I don't know what the maximum flash synch speed for your 6D MkII is. If shooting in Tv or Av mode try setting things up in full manual mode.

Afraid not - I've tried changing the shutter speed from 1"-1/250" manually & in each mode, the menu option remains greyed out in the menu & the flash won't fire.

Firstly do you mean the EOS R6 Mark II, not the EOS 6D Mark II DSLR?

The flash will not work at all with the EOS 6D Mark II DSLR as the camera does not have the new style hotshoe.

Please check the camera firmware version. Support for the Speedlite EL-5 was added to the EOS R6 Mark II with fimrware version 1.1.1 and later. Secondly, the Speedlite EL-5 does not work with electronic shutter mode on the EOS R6 Mark II; you have to set the shutter mode to either mechanical or first curtain electronic. You will find the setting on the 7th tab of the red menus. Also if you choose silent shutter function or focus bracketing this also switches electronic shutter on, so you cannot use them with flash.

Hi there - the EOS 6D Mk 2 DOES have the new style hotshoe. It should work & it does when I changed the shutter mode as you advised - so thank you as that has fixed the problem. It works fine on either of the other two settings. Going back to Ken Rockwell's user guide for the 6D(ii) he does mention shutter mode "This is where I choose Electronic so I can get to 40 FPS or First-Curtain so I can use flash." I just didn't clock this first-time. So thanks for your advice - spot on!
