topic EOS R5 Mark II loses autofocus easily during video recording in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

I got a new R5 Mark II. The autofocus while shooting videos is literally terrible. Half of the footage that I take are unusable. I am using an RF 24-70mm f2.8 with it. I tried everything. If the person moves in the frame, the camera will loose focus immediately and it takes time to return to focus. It is very jittery. The autofocus is worse than a cheap 200$ camera,.. and this is a 4300$ camera. My R10 which is considerably cheaper has an excellent autofocus during videos (never losing focus) in comparison to the R5 II.

I read in some other places that there are indeed issues with the autofocus in some of the R5 mark II and canon is investigating it.So what the heck? Is anyone having similar issues in videos and if so, what have you done about it? Did I just waste 4300$ on an unusable camera?

Sorry to hear that you are having issues. It sounds like the camera doesn’t know what to focus on.

Greetings,

I recommend you download the R5 mkII user guide. Take a look at the Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity. Try Decreasing (-) the sensitivity.

Finally someone else is seeing the same problem as me. I am having the same autofocus problem. It's almost fuji level. My R5 had rock solid AF in video. I tried all different settings and tried multiple different lenses including rf 24-70 f2.8, 15-35 f2.8 and 35 f1.4 vcm.. Same issue. Randomly loses focus when subject turns away for a second and then takes a good few seconds to grab focus. I am hoping this is just a software bug and not an actual hardware issue.

What firmware are you on right now? Is it firmware 1.0.3? If yes, that is the culprit, I guess, cause ever since I updated my R5 Mark II to firmware 1.0.3, it has been having a similar issue. Maybe not at the level you mentioned, but I noticed it after the firmware update. Before that firmware, the autofocus was rock solid, even better than the original R5. I am currently testing PowerShot V1, which has much better autofocus performance than the R5 Mark II in video. Hopefully, they will solve this issue in the next firmware update.
