EOS 1Ds Mk II rear control dial doesn't seem to work

Hello. My EOS 1Ds Mk II has a problem. The rear control dial doesn't seem to work, in that it never changes any setting in shooting mode. In all other respects it works fine, but in M mode for instance, the front control dial changes shutter speed but the rear does zilch. Likewise, flash exposure comp., regular comp. both don't work with the rear dial. Am I missing something? The on/off switch is on, but the camera behaves like it's off. The dial DOES work for menu selection and moving around the menus.

Am I missing something? I've reset all custom and personal setting, reset the date/time clock, and the firmware is current.

The switch to the upper left of the dial must be set to 'ON'. Otherwise the dial wil not work.

I agree. Send it to Canon service. I think they still work on the 1Ds Mk II but not the 1D Mk II.

Say, I never checked this, but if you have your 1Ds handy, can you navigate the menu system using the rear control dial with the switch off?

These are wonderful cameras! The pixel pitch is big and the prints are fabulous. They capture stuff the mega MP cameras can't and are not even close. I mostly shoot with the 1Ds Mk III now but the 1Ds Mk II is a very fine camera.

I'm sure they're great on a tripod, and I do see people carrying them around. But at a fast-paced event where you generally need two cameras and at least one big lens, anything heavier than a 5D seems pretty much unthinkable to me. Just sayin'.

Bob in Boston,

All I can say is, you need to try a 1 series. If you do you will never go back to any other camera. There is a 1 series and there is everything else. I have a seven year old grandson that doesn't seem to have any problems with carrying one or shooting with it.

I regularly carry my 1D Mk IV and the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8. Plus my 1D Mk III or 1Ds Mk III with the 24-70mm f2.8.

I use hand straps on each and the heavier 1D Mk IV (12 lbs with the Siggy) on a Black Rapid.

Right now the best buy, on the planet, in a camera body is a good condition used 1D Mk III. All I can say is you need to try one. The minute you pick it up, you will know.

Bob from Boston,

As good as the 5D Mk III is, and I love them as they are very outstanding cameras, the 1D Mk IV is better, IMHO, of course.

And the price for a real nice Mk IV and a 5D3 is about the same.

I guess I am used to the weight factor because I came from a world where I carried F1n's with a motor drive attached with 12 AA batteries. I usually had a 600mm or a 400mm great white on one, too. I carried that combo all over these United States for years. Up and down the Rockies to the ruins at Mesa Verde and a ton of other places. From the western deserts to the swamps in the South lands.

It's all good, right?
