I just bought a new Canon R5 last week but I can't get it to take a picture. I have a lens attached and think all the settings are correct but something is going on to prevent the shutter from taking a picture. Thoughts?

Hello Goegl01, welcome to the forums.

There are several reasons why a camera will not take photos.

When the camera comes from the factory brand new, it is set to take photos without a card. This is to allow a camera store to demonstrate the camera without putting a card inside. Most photographer advise turning this setting off, which means it will not take photos without a valid card inside.

When set to one-shot AF, the camera will not take a photo until it has focused. If focus is not possible then it doesn't take a photo.

If the memory card in the camera is full or cannot be written to then it is not possible to take photos. For SD type cards check the switch on the side of the card is not in the lock position.

You didn't mention what lens you have, Canon RF lenses have no problems, but some older or adapted manual lenses don't communicate with the camera electronics which makes the camera believe no lens is fitted. In this situation the camera is configured not to take photos. There is a custom function to allow the camera to take photos without a lens to allow the use of older manual lenses or some cine lenses. I've used this when mounting my camera on a spotting scope.

Beyond this I suggest reseting the camera to factory default settings, making sure you have a charged battery and memory card with space in the camera, then fit a Canon lens and try again.

Along with p4Pictures advice, Go outside on a sunny day, press the mode button and set the A+ mode. Point the camera at something in the middle distance and press the shutter button all the way down.

Thank you. I have a brand new SD card in there. I bought a sigma 150-600 lens and have it connected with a Canon adaptor currently. I do have a Canon 50mm that I can try instead. Battery life is full. I'll try some of the other suggestions and see if it will work. Appreciate the feedback.

Make sure it is a full size SD card and not a micro card with adapter. Canon's don't like the adapters.

How do you know it's not taking a picture? If the camera is set to electronic shutter, you won't hear anything when the "shutter" is released.

I'm new here and new to photography in general and just got my Canon R5 last week! I had the same issue with mine just today and obviously did something to put it in video mode by mistake and after about an hour I found the solution online.... press the Mode button and then the info button. Just like that it was working properly
