I would agree with Brian. The 5DIII is a classic for video, it brought the medium to the DSLR world like no other. Being a FF sensor, it will offer more shallow DoF and better low light performance than the 7DII. I owned both, and to this day have a nagging sense of remorse for selling that 5DIII camera.

Hi everyone, I have a question. I'm a student, and in one of my film courses, we're covering the topic of no/low-budget filming. I wanted to borrow a budget camera from the university for filming. I have the option of using the Canon 5D Mark III or the 7D Mark II. I know both cameras don´t have features like C-Log profiles. I'm trying to weigh the options. My question to you is: Which camera is best suited for filming – the 5D Mark III or the 7D Mark II?

Greetings,

I would choose the 5D Mark III. It supports 4K 30. The 7D Mark II only supports 1080p.

The 5D Mark III also does not line skip. There are some other reasons, but these are the biggest ones.

This is a tough one to call as they are both similar. I'd probably select the EOS 5D Mark III just for the better low light performance from the full-frame sensor.

Unfortunately, and contradicting my colleague, neither camera will record in 4K, they are both limited to 1080P.

Both do not provide C-log, so it is best to use the Neutral picture style with the sharpness set to 0, contrast set to -4 and saturation set to -4 for flat looking footage that allows more room for grading in the edit. An alternative if you can find it is to download and install the Canon CineStyle picture style.

Darn Google. Thank you for correcting me Brian.

I had a feeling... 😠. That's what I get for not checking my source.

Video resolution

The 5D Mark III offers 4K 30fps video recording, while the 7D Mark II's maximum video resolution is 1080p

I have over the years built a collection of all the camera manuals in PDF format, so I can readily check details in them. Though I'm definitely going to make a T-shirt with the slogan…

Ask Brian, he's more accurate than Google!

😂

I have also found a feature of Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 Mark II that when I asked ChatGPT about it, it had no idea the feature existed and what it could do or be used for.
