EOS 6D shutter speed isn't limited by Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II

I have a Canon 6D and a Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite. How come, at times, the camera shutter speed isn’t limited to 1/180 second or below with the flash on? It seems normally it is limited but sometimes it will allow me to set the shutter speed to anything up to 1/4000 second which obviously won’t work. What am I missing?

On the MR-14EX II you can enable high speed sync that will allow the shutter speed to go beyond the normal sync speed of 1/180 for your EOS 6D Mark II. You can set high speed sync from the button below the right end of the Speedlite LCD panel, or from the camera External flash menu.

When using high speed sync, the way the flash fires changes, instead of a brief almost instantaneous burst of light, it changes to be a short duration continuous light of around 1/125s. What this means is that the shutter speed you choose has an effect on the power available. If you increase the shutter speed from 1/250 to 1/500 your flash will be 1-stop less powerful. Secondly the freezing action of the short duration flash will be lost, so you might see some blur in your photos if the subject is moving. Think the wings of insects in flight will be less frozen with HSS than with normal flash.

The X-sync speed of the 6D is 1/180th of a sec. I've seen many Canon roll past it. But once the picture is taken the camera reports 1/180th of a sec. It seems odd that it can roll past it.

I know what you mean here. If I put a Speedlite on my camera, set the camera to manual exposure I can roll the main dial and change shutter speed as I like, even faster than the sync speed, eg 1/2000. However once I activate the camera metering, with a half-press of the shutter, then the shutter speed is forced back to the sync speed. Once a photo has been taken and the metering timer expires the shut speed reverts back to the unrestricted 1/2000 speed I had before, until the shutter is half-pressed again to activate metering.

If the metering timer is active it won't allow you to roll past the x-sync speed. Unless HSS is activated on the Macro Ring Lite, Speedlite or Flash Trigger. My EOS 5D Mark IV won't allow me to roll past x-sync if HSS hasn't been activated on the speedlite. I also tried this on an EOS 6D classic it too wouldn't roll past the x-sync if the metering timer was active.
