You have high frequency anti flicker shooting enabled.

HF anti flicker works by fractionally adjusting the shutter speed to avoid banding from high frequency - often LED - lighting.

EOS R5 Mark II strange shutter speeds in Tv mode

So I have owned a Canon camera from the days of film and I feel like an idiot asking this question. I just got the R5 Mark2 and when I select Tv [Shutter Priority], I was expecting the Main Dial to change my shutter speed, but not quite as I expected ...

When I turn the Main Dial I get values like 1/425.9 then 1/428.2 for my shutter speed. Does anyone have a link to explain what I am missing? When I select Fv mode the Main dial works like I was expect it to change. In M Mode the values look like Tv mode again. I thought that maybe I might use the Fv Mode, but I seem to be able to only control exposure level with the Quick Control dial 1.

I am sure this is some sort of improvement and I would love to understand HOW to use it, but for now I would just like to shoot Tv with my old familiar settings 🙂

-cbz

Thanks this is a new feature since my 5Ds and it makes sense that it would work that way. This setting probably deserves a spot in MyMenu 🙂

Brian/p4pictures, thank you very much. Imagine my consternation at a football (soccer) pitch yesterday, scrolling my shutter dial through ~ 40+ clicks to go from 1/1021 sec to 1/512.3 (or thereabouts) on a brand-new R1. You have helped me preserve sanity.

Glad to be of help.

You might want to check this part of the user guide to understand how to use this feature and when it would be helpful.

That is most helpful. I turned on flicker detection as soon as I purchased the camera body , as I have for every Canon that enables it (my lighting situations are infested with flicker), but did not anticipate Canon's upgrade to earlier-generation flicker detection or its effect on shutter control. I am now giving up substantial photo time to read the _entire_ advanced manual, and clearly that's a good investment of time.
