Here's the info: Canon T7, San Disk Ultra 32GB (not locked), Lenovo laptop with Windows 11, Firefox browser. Hope that is enough. I have had this problem for about a week. The photos show up on the screen on the camera. I insert the card into the slot on the laptop. I get the "ding" and the screen pops up. After that, nothing but a blank screen for photos. I did this yesterday and let it "sit" for at least a half hour to see if it resurrected. Nothing. Never had this trouble before. Have downloaded loads of photos with this card. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Try using a USB cord to get the images to the computer, and then reformat the card in the camera to continue using the reader.

Have you tried direct download with a standard USB cable? The driver for your card reader could have gotten corrupted, or worst case, it could have just died altogether.
You might double-check to see if there are any Windows Updates that might help. Barring that, the next thing (and what I would do) is to get a small card reader. This one is very much like the one I have - it has both common USB ports, and micro & standard SD card slots & it's about $20 on Amazon:

What "screen" pops up when you insert the card in the computer? Are you using EOS Utility?

The card should appear in Windows File Manager as a drive. Does it? If not, your internal card reader is suspect. Try reading other SD cards. If it DOES appear as a drive, open it, open the DCIM folder. Your photo files are there. Move them to the computer.

You DO NOT need EOS Utility to get photos from the memory card to the camera. It just complicates things, in my view. Just use a USB cable to connect camera to computer, or use an external or computer's internal card reader.

Got two emails regarding this question. Card: SanDisk Ultra 48 MB/s 32GB. USB cable: will try it but I feel the more between the source and destination, the more interference. I have a card reader....somewhere.

I can see the photos on the camera but only get the opening screen when I insert the card but nothing after that. It just sits.

Tried card reader and got even less...not even the blank screen. Title isn't accurate as I insert the memory card directly into the slot on the laptop. Tried USB cable but manual didn't have anything on it. Attached cable to camera, turned on camera, inserted into USB slot in laptop. Nothing. Will take the card and laptop to Staples as I have a maintenance contract. Will call first to see if this is covered. If not...a trip to my son and grandson.

John,

I don't know that it will make a difference. but I'd suggest that you attach the cables first, and then turn your camera on. Any peripherals: cables, lenses, cards, batteries, etc. should be attached while the camera is off.

Tried everything but sacrificing an unblemished lamb. Card: SanDisk Ultra 48MB/s 32GB; have used this card many times. Inserted memory card (not locked) into slot on laptop. I only get a sound and blank screen but nothing happens. Cable: nothing; inserted cable into camera port, turned on camera and cable into USB slot on laptop. Found the card reader; nothing. Tried another card; PNY Technologies 2.0GB; photos visible on camera but after inserting the card, I don't even get the blank screen when inserted. If my son and grandson can't help, it's off to Staples to see if the service contract covers this. The other two cards have been used and downloaded perfectly.

Did that. Taking the laptop and card to Staples to run a virus scan. Tech said he couldn't guarantee a solution but a scan might uncover a problem. Frustrating, to say the least. Technology is great until it doesn't work.

I concur with wq9nsc. I think it is much preferable to use a USB cable over constant removal-replacing the SD card in the camera.

I have five Canon DSLRs, Powershots G5 and G11 and other pocket digitals. None of them have ever failed to connect via USB and show up on different computers, allowing moving files from memory card to computer, when the files appear on the camera.

USB A-mini B cables are cheap. SD card adapters for a computer are cheap. You can easily try others if one doesn't seem to work.

A camera should show up in Windows File Manager, Mac or Linux desktops just like an external hard drive or flash drive does. If it does not, after trying cables and card readers, then there is a problem with the camera...either the USB port or more internally.

If you can see photos when reviewing them in-camera, they are on the memory card. Period.

Update: I took the laptop to Staples and it checked out negative on viruses, etc. Two guys were most patient as I'm of the slide rule and Univac generation. It seems that Microsoft snuck in an update without notifying anyone. I loaded a card with new photos but this new "system" will take getting use to as it took me a long time to get used to the last one. I think I can stumble through it plus some help from my son and grandson. Grandson works for pizza. I have mixed photos that will need to be sorted and moved to an appropriate file.

Anyway, thanks to all who replied.
