topic Sound levels - manual or auto? in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

I've been recording sound with the T4i by setting the levels manually, but since you can't see the levels in real time while recording, I've gotten some clipping..... the last time I recorded I used the camera's automatic levels feature. I'm using an Opteka VM-100 condenser shotgun mic mounted on the camera. I know I read somewhere, that someone warned against using the camera's autolevels, but why not, if it prevents clipping?
