When you select movie mode from the power switch you can choose from the camera menu whether it will be automatic effectively program mode, or manual exposure. With manual selected you have control of shutter speed, aperture value and ISO. For some degree of automation you can use manual with auto ISO.

Av mode works fine with photos but as soon as I turn the dial to video, ALL settings become automatic. I cannot adjust aperture at all. Same with Tv and P modes. None of these modes work. I can only do full manual or full automatic.

Is this how the camera is supposed to work or am I missing something?

Your camera is functioning correctly. Only higher end cameras offer P, Av, Tv modes.

syena,

I have a Canon T8i. Right in the manual, it says that when you have the camera in TV or Av modes when shooting video, the camera will default to the P mode where the camera will decide the shutter speed and aperture.

Which is kind of nice sometimes, like if you are shooting something that's in the shade, and then they move into a sunny area. The camera will adjust the settings to account for that.

Steve Thomas
