Hi Waddizzle, I have attempted to use a SanDisk 32GB Ultra SDHC I and one other that I left at work (I don't remember what kind... a 32GB SanDisk Extreme I think). I have a bunch of these that I bought from Amazon and BH at different times. The Ultra is the one I've been using the most.

I teach a class, so I have multiple Canon DSLR models (T5i, T6i, T7, T7i, 70D). We frequently swap cards between them, although I usually reformat cards after we download images from them, so kids are grabbing a clean card to use. And they use them a lot. In fact, my cards are more likely to fall apart from use before they get corrupted, but, yes, I think the ones that do corrupt tend to be the micros.

I've had the R8s for just a few weeks and have been using two of them multiple times with the same kind of cards without incident... until one of the cameras just stopped accepting any card whatsoever. I tried clearing out the card slot, but there was no debris and nothing obviously broken that I could see.

Frankly I think I'm going to have to send out this camera to be serviced. I need it for work, and the sooner I start that process the better. I'd welcome more feedback from anyone, though, and I appreciate the feedback offered so far.

EOS R8 - Is Not Reading SD Cards

Canon R8 cannot read SD cards that it was reading just fine for weeks. It is a new camera, and I cannot detect any damage when I peek into the card slot. I am using cards that are listed as compatible on the Canon site. I also reset the camera to factory settings. The full error message is "Card cannot be accessed. Reinsert/change the card or format card with camera."

I've seen a lot of errors posted on this site about the same issue but not for the R8 specifically. I just got the camera, so I'd rather not be sending it off to a service center so soon. Is there another explanation?

comety,

Have you tried re-formatting one of the cards?

I only ask because I got the same message after putting a card into a card reader. I figured the card reader corrupted the files somehow. I formatted the card and dumped that reader. Things seem to be working well now.

Steve Thomas

Hi thanks for responding. I have tried both full sized SD cards and micros with no success. This is my first mirrorless. I have used various Canon DSLRs for a long time.
I feel like it was resolved. I’m not sure what the final outcome was.

The issues seems to have been caused by the use of micro-SD cards. Swapping cards between bodies is a recipe for card failure, too.

Hi, sorry, I moved on from the topic and didn't realize anyone still wanted to know how this turned out. I'm sure you already resolved your issue, but my resolution involved sending the camera to Canon to have it serviced. It has worked fine since then.

Unfortunately, one of my other R8s just developed a similar issue, except the error message states "no card in camera". So while the previous problem was that the camera saw the cards but could not read them, now the problem is that camera does not see the cards at all. I guess I will send this other camera to Canon to be serviced too.

Right now I consider the Canon R8 to be the biggest piece of SH...T on the market. Bought a brand new one and used it for 4 months perfectly then it stop reading SD cards all together no matter what I tried. The seller replaced the camera with another brand new one. I am supposed to shoot a video in one week and am traveling to do so. I used is one day as a test for 45 minutes perfectly, uploaded the video, put the sd card back in the camera and it will not read it no matter what I try including two brand new SD cards a new SD to USC adapter, even though my computer has an SD card slot. Ridiculous! Piece of SHI...T! Get to together canon! Selling this crap to the public!

I thought I would update to this post mainly because I am already online submitting yet another repair request for the R8 for the same problem -- it suddenly stopped reading SD cards.

I have five R8 cameras and have submitted four of them to be serviced for the SD card issue, one of them twice. Each time, Canon has replaced the circuit board, and everything worked great (until something breaks again). I have no complaint with the service department; they have gotten the job done efficiently as best as I can tell. My frustration is with the product. That said I have a lot of R8s, and they just fell out of warranty. Canon just quoted me $399 to repair the most recent problem. My commitment to the product is waning.

In case this helps anyone, the most useful repair comment for a previous repair was "it was found that the pins in the sd card slot on the main circuit board were broken causing the unit to no longer recognize the memory card. The main circuit board was replaced... Please make sure that the sd cards you are using are not damaged in any way because this can cause more damage to the pins causing them to break inside the slot." I have never had this issue with my other Canon bodies. Could be the R8 is particularly sensitive?
