Canon 77D is being stuck on 99% during firmware upgrade

Hi,

I have tried to update the firmware of the Canon 77D dlsr, from ver 1.0.2 to 1.1.0.

The first time I did it - it was stuck in the 99th percentage of the process.

The only option available to see in the camera (after removing and installing back the battery) is the Firmware Update program.

I then used other cards, formating the cards both using other similar Canon DSLR (not the exact model - Rebel T5i) and trying to both update to 1.1.0 or 1.0.3, each time the result is the same (I have once managed to get to 100% but it was stuck there..)

Any help will be appreciated!!

How long did you wait when the firmware update was "stuck"?

I would give the camera at least five minutes after the 100% before deciding it was stuck, then I might wait for another five minutes to be sure. You should see an update complete message after the update has finished.

Also it is best to not hold the camera so that you don't mistakenly press a button while the update is in porogress. I tend to put the camera on the table while the update proceeds. I also remove the lens too, as at some point in the past an update for another camera was blocked from working if a specific lens was attached, since then I simplify the camera to the body only when doing firmware updates.

I have waited much more than 10 minutes, sometimes even two hours but without luck..

I have also detached the lens before the last tries for update, but again it didn't worked..

Use a small capacity card if possible. I keep an old 4GB SD card for firmware updates. Some cameras have problems with large capacity cards when doing updates.

Also I would advise you to download the firmware and extract it again before trying to update this time.

In addition to Brian's comments, please reset the camera's setting to default before the update is attempted. Use a fully charged battery and a full size formatted in camera memory card.

There is no way to reset the camera's settings, since the camera's regular user interface is inaccessible, only the firmware upgrade screens are (see below)...

Thank you for clarifying. I was under the impression that you were able to recover the camera but were not able to upgrade. I'm afraid the camera is bricked. I do not believe the 77D is eligible for repair or is still being serviced by Canon. It's possible that a third party might be able to help. Search for camera repair with your ZIP code. Sorry I don't have something more positive to offer.

Good News: I was been able to recover the camera!!

I have first sent the camera to the official Canon lab in my country (Israel) with no luck - they said they need to replace the whole electronic circuit (with a cost of a new camera).

So I have downloaded a boot file called Portable ROM dumper from the Magiclauntem site, copied to the sd card (after formating in PC) and loaded it to the camera. This make the camera to write in screen the software version and so on, but especially it enabled the camera to understand that the current version which is installed is broken.

Afterwards, I have used the normal canon version file (delete the sd card and copy it) and then inserting to the camera and the upgrade process have successfully ended.

The difference in the upgrade screen now (after using the Portable ROM dumper) was that now the upgrade said it is from version 0.0.0 to 1.0.3, where beforehand it was 1.0.2->1.0.3

i used what you say and i saw on my screen it show 0.0.0 to 1.0.3 but it still stucks in 99% i don’t know what to do

Did you now formatted the card again and put the right canon version again? Are you sure that now you are using the right canon firmware and a right sd card type?

when i dump it will be files like rom and rom1 md5 after that i need just to delete the dumper.fir and put the update fir after that i just put the sd card back to camera and update ?

Yes, delete all the files except of the update fir and try to do the upgrade again. Now it should work given that you see 0.0.0 -> 1.0.3

format the card then put the fir dumper

insert to camera the run it after that format the card and put for first time the update fir thats it?

okay it shows 0.0.0 to 1.0.3 but it stucks at 99%
i think it needs new board 😓
