Questions on image.com availability, picture styles, and ISO shift

Hey everyone

what will happen after image.com is no longer available will there be any alternative?

Can someone please explain me,but in language that kid would understand ,what fineness,threshold do in pictures styles? The manual somehow explains that but how in real life this affects image? Also clarity setting, not quite sure how to understand that one.

Does auto ISO sometimes plays and adjust itself wrong? I had few times in past week’s situation where auto iso been blinking at 6400 but I swear that it needed reducing for more details overall to be visible,and im not talking about high contrast images.

Firstly image.canon is not closing, but one of the features, long term image storage is being stopped. You will still be able to upload images to the service but they will only be there for 30 days. This might be enough for a backup while on a trip away, and then you download the images to your computer or to another online long term storage service.

The terms fineness and threshold used in the Picture Styles are similar to the terms radius and threshold used in Photoshop Unsharp Mask filter. You will find it hard to see the effect of these adjustments on images scaled down to screen size.

Clarity is another setting independent of the Picture Style that increases the mid-tone contrast of the image. It's effect is similar to the clarity control in Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.

The best way to check the visual effects of these settings is to use Canon Digital Photo Professional to process a RAW image from your camera. DPP provides these settings, fineness, threshold and clarity settings as the camera does and you would be able to see the effect on a section of the image at 100% on your own screen.

Auto ISO value will depend on the brightness of the scene or subject and what metering mode you are using. In many situations the cameras are very good at selecting appropriate values. If you want hold more detail in the highlights then you can try using a little negative exposure compensation, maybe -1/3 or -2/3 EV which would reduce the ISO value required. Do you have some example images that will show the loss of detail you mention?

as for image. Com the confusion is because the 30 days limit seems to be in place already for some time , then I received notification about termination of service so I wasn’t sure what is happening.

Yes it's the 10GB capacity part that is for long term storage that is ending, the rolling 30-day storage is being retained. From your screenshot I can see you are not using the 10GB space at all anyway.

Since your screenshot shows you have the EOS R10, you can also do the test of the picture style settings and clarity in the camera too. If you capture a shot in RAW, go to the blue tabs in the menu, second page and select RAW image processing. After choosing the image, select Set up processing -> JPEG and then you can change the picture style settings plus the clarity before saving the changed image as a new JPG. Since this uses the exact same DIGIC image processor the results are perfect match to how the camera would process with the selected fineness, threshold and clarity settings.
