I got out my Canon EOS R5 and viewed the images on the camera.

If you repeatedly press the INFO button it will cycle thru 3 views on the LCD screen: default view with info, larger, full screen image without info, full screen image with a band of data at the top and the bottom and then back to default.

If you start with the default and use the joystick, up or down, it will cycle thru 10 pages of data at the bottom of the screen, below the image and histogram.

Unfortunately, there was no view of the name of the file, just the number of the image and the total images.

In this case, 7/7.

I've selected the 'wrench' tab page 1 > File name and changed the file name to "IMG_"

Same settings for both 1 and 2 of the User Settings.

Despite this, when I download the images to my computer, the setting is incorrect:

_MG_0113.CR3

Sowing an underscore at the start of the name instead of a capital "I"

Is this a bug?

Also, is there a way to view the filename for an image in camera screen?

Thanks

Thanks Peter:

Where did that screen shot come from? It's fairly informative.

So, am I to understand that we can't name our image files as we see fit? I never shoot sRGB I and never will, so that part of the name is a waste to me.

"It's from the manual."

Where? Page Number? My version of the manual has 944 pages.

"And this is the way that Canon has been naming its image files since, like, forever."

That's fantastic, new to Canon but the question was what does it mean when Canon gives you the option to set the name of the file to a user choice if Canon is overriding part of the name?

What part do we get to set?

I don't know which Peter showed, the R5C, maybe? but the page he showed shows up on page 895 of the 944 page manual you have.

You can choose anything you want, but if you select AdobeRGB, you get '_' as the first character.

Sorry. I had the manual for R6 in my phone so it was easier to just open that one and search for sRGB instead of downloading the manual for R5.

Anyway, don't you rename your pictures when you transfer them to the computer?

The guys have the naming convention covered so I'll answer your last question about displaying the file name. If I recall, during image review you can press (cycle) the Info button. I believe one of the pages shows the file name. The one with the histogram of I'm not mistaken. 🙂 ...and I might be. 🤣

Canon uses an industry standardised EXIF file naming scheme. The file naming part is designed as follows

filename structure

[four characters][four digits].Extension

so IMG_1234.JPG or IMG_1234.CR3 are valid filename.

EXIF standard also defines that images captured with sRGB and AdobeRGB color spaces should be differentiated. When the camera is set to AdobeRGB the initial character will be set to underscore. So filename become

_MG_1234.JPG and _MG_1234.CR3

Additionally the standard defines the folder structure used on the card. Images are stored in the DCIM folder then subfolders are created with the following structure.

[three digits][five characters]

For example 100CANON or 100EOSR5

Since only four numeric digits are used for the filename there can only be a maximum of 9999 images in a folder. When image IMG_9999 has been written the camera creates a new folder 101CANON and starts numbering the files from 0001 again.

Filenames and folders use uppercase characters only.
