Why do you need to know the shutter count? You would need to send it in to Canon to get an official count.

If you haven't reset your filenames during the usage of the camera, a rough estimate can be obtained by looking at the difference between your first and most recent image. Do note though that filenames typically just have 4 digits, so check in if you've wrapped around one or more times (i.e. reached 9999, went back to 1, reached 9999 again, etc.)

Welcome to the forum.

I am not here to question the merits of knowing shutter count.

However, I have to question the value and meaning of a “shutter count” on a mirrorless camera body that can capture photos without ever using its mechanical shutter, assuming it even has one. Some MILC bodes do not have a mechanical shutter.

Thanks for the information. I also cannot think of a use for shutter count, but was curious about how to find it.

I have suggested to the exiftool maintainer Phil Harvey that "shuttercount" on the EOS R5 is in the same location as on the EOS R6 .

https://exiftool.org/forum/index.php?topic=15579.0

These are hex bytes expresssed in decimal, so (72*256)+44 is the count for file IMG_8398.CR3 from my EOS R5.

Canon Camera Info Unknown 0x0af1: 44

Interesting. Shouldn't really be named shutter count in the Makernotes but total shoot instead. Perhaps there are many more Canon models with a counter in Makernotes?

I said shutter count since that is what was used for EOS R6 in exiftool.

I would make a first guess that might be true for all of the RF mount cameras, or maybe only the more recent ones or maybe only some other subset.

"Canon Camera Info Unknown 0x0af1" and 0x0af2 interpreted as two bytes of a 16 bit integer.

gphoto2 does not report shutter count for EOS R5. I have no use for shutter count other than curiosity and would not buy a program to get shutter count.

File number does not increment is the same name space when tethered using EOS Utility and saving to computer hard disk. This results in a discrepancy between shutter count number and file number. Shutter count number is reported to not increment when making a movie, but file number does increment.
