I was originally going to get the EOS 6D Mark II but then I was wondering if EOS 5D Mark IV would be better for both? Mirrorless isn't in my budget right now so I'm looking at DSLR. TIA

A very popular wedding camera was indeed to EOS 5D Mark IV. While I don't shoot weddings, I went for the 5D over the 6D Mark II for several reasons to include:

Dual card slots

Viewfinder shows 100% of the captured image and not a slightly cropped version.

Slightly higher flash sync speed of 1/200s.

Much more focusing points.

A ton of extra features to include remembering the selected focus independently when the camera is positioned in landscape vs portrait orientation.

Ricky's points are so true. Unless you go with a 1D series, the 5D4 is the king of the Pro-Sumer DSLR. I owned the 6D2 and really enjoyed it. At the time (6 years) ago, buying a $3500 camera wasn't a priority for me. Owning a 6D2 changed all that. There wasn't a great deal of difference in dynamic range, but the 5D4 was capable of capturing more detail and you could see a difference in what it could pull from the shadows when looking closely. This was one differentiator.

After that however, the 5D4 had one of the most advanced AF systems available. Super fast focus acquisition and tracking. It set many industry standards for sports, wildlife and wedding photography. The 5D4 could really do it all. Coupled with "L" series glass its a true force to be reckoned with. It turned 7 yrs old in Sept.

Here is the only consideration I will mention. If you don't own any lenses now (which is the real investment) in photography, then buying into a last generation standard might not be as good of an investment in the long run. Mirrorless might be within your reach. You didn't disclose your budget.

Take a look, this is what I was thinking:

Canon R6 II vs Canon 5D MIV Detailed Comparison (cameradecision.com)

Well I'm currently looking at spending at least $1900 on the 6D with a 24-70mm lens all together (used). And I'm not sure if there's any available mirrorless cameras in that price range? What mirrorless camera should I look for? If I were to go that route?

So I can't go wrong with the 5D? Is there a camera you would recommend over it? For DSLR and mirrorless? Thank you!

“ Mirrorless isn't in my budget right now so I'm looking at DSLR. TIA. “

Maybe a mirrorless is within your budget. The R6 mark II costs significantly less than a 5D4, even if you include the RF-EF mount adapter for any EF lenses you might currently own. While the 5D4 is an excellent camera body, Canon has already announced an end or service life date for both bodies within the next few years.

Speaking of which, do you currently own any EF mount lenses? If not, then you may be looking at the used lens market if you decide to stick with a DSLR. Canon stopped R&D for EF mount a few years ago. Canon has discontinued many EF lenses, if not most of them.

Several years ago I faced the same choice 6D2 or 5D4. As a hobbyist, I was not looking for a professional grade body with dual card slots. Each body has its pros and cons over the other body. I chose the 6D2 because it offered Bluetooth, which the 5D4 lacked, and a couple other reasons that are subject to debate.

Given that same choice today, I would select the R6 mark II, hands down. Performance wise, the R6 mark II runs circles around the 6D2 and 5D4.

I was in this same boat, one of the biggest factors that played into my decision was the articulating screen on the 6D2. As great as the 5D4 was, I had to have that one feature which had grown on me after owning a T6s. I never regret the decision.

@cmgracephotos, please take a look at the comparison link in my post above.

What lenses do you currently have. If you have any EF-S lenses they won't work ANY of Canon's Full Frame bodies. With a mount adapter they can be used with some limitations on Full Frame EOS R series cameras. Do note that Canon's Full Frame camera bodies and the mirrorless R7 lack a built in flash. So if flash photography is necessary for your needs you will need to look into an external speedlite.

"If you are just starting out, then I recommend the R series of cameras."

This is the best advice. I have done more weddings than I can count. And, starting out there is no logical reason to stick with a DSLR.

I can tell you if you are serious you will need more than one lens. A lot of people think "wow" I would like to start doing weddings. They have no idea how or what it takes to be successful at it.
