Anybody else having this problem with the Canon R6 freezing up. It usually starts with the camera not focusing. Its also becomes none responsive to mode changes. The on/off button doesnt work. Opening the battery door shuts it off... but still doesn't fix it. Pulling the battery out usually fixs the problem right away. But again... not always and sometimes it take a few battery removals to get it back up and running.

This has happened while shooting both photo and video. It happens with different lenses. It happens with different memory cards. I can't recreate the problem on command. The camera works 99% of the time. But at least once a wedding shoot, over the period of 6 hours, It freezes up!

In the video below... I was attached to the Ronin gimbal. But it's happened just shooting photos and without the gimbal. Plus, when I open the battery door and try and turn the camera on/off... it still doesn't work. Has nothing to do with that.

I was on firmware version 1.4
I updated the firmware this week to version 1.5.0.
This problem has been happening for a long time... 8 months. Camera is less than a year old.

Again, at last nights wedding... it froze.

Here is a video that I recorded when it happened.
1. Focus isn't working. Both back button and touch.
2. Display freezes up. You can still see the audio working.

3. On/off doesn't work.

4. open battery door... nothing works.

5. Pull Battery

Hi llehmann,

I'm sorry to see your EOS R6 is freezing. As jaewoosong mentioned you may want to try updating your firmware to version 1.5.1. That update includes a fix to help with the camera freezing during focus. If you need a link to where the firmware update is available that is HERE. Once you are on the web page click on the gray Drivers and Downloads button and select the Firmware tab.

If the camera continues freezing after the firmware update there are a few things to check. The first is to try loading a different battery in the camera to see if the same thing happens. If that doesn't resolve the issue the next thing is to load new memory cards in the camera. If the camera still freezes at that point try attaching a different lens. Sometimes if the battery, memory card, or lens are malfunctioning they can cause a camera to freeze like that.

If swapping those pieces out doesn't resolve the freezing we would recommend sending the camera in for repair. If you send it in for repair make sure to include a copy of the proof of purchase in the box. The technician will need that to verify the warranty.

Canon U.S.A., Inc. has created a new online repair portal that allows you to set up service in a few simple steps. The repair portal gives you the ability to set up service for multiple pieces of equipment at once, and to receive a repair estimate in the majority of cases, depending on your model and issue. The portal also allows you to upload images or videos that will assist us in repairing your product. You can also select how you wish to be notified of the progress of your repair. The portal's service history section allows you to view all services that have been performed on any of your camera or video products since January 7, 2020.

Please follow the link below to access our online repair

https://mycanon.usa.canon.com/signin

Instructions for Accessing and Using the Online Repair Portal

You will need to access or create your My Canon Account.

If you already have a My Canon Account and your product is already registered, simply click on the “Get Repair Services” link on the left menu and follow the onscreen instructions to arrange for service for your product.

If you have a My Canon Account and your product is not registered, you must register your product first. Click on the “Get Repair Services” link on the left menu, then click on the “Register Product” link on the right. After your product is registered, click on the “Get Repair Service” link on the left menu and follow the onscreen instructions to arrange for service for your product.

If you do not have a My Canon Account, you will need to create one. After you create your account, click on the “Add Product” link to register your first product. After your product is registered, click on the “Get Repair Service” link on the left menu and follow the onscreen instructions to arrange for service for your product.

Once you have completed the repair request, you will have an opportunity to print a copy of the request for your records. This request form will also contain shipping instructions and an address label that you will attach to the outside of your shipping box when mailing your equipment for repair.

Well I'm at Ver 1.5.2 and I experienced the full freezing for the first time today photographing a child session. Wouldn't let me change my focus with the finger drag, wouldn't let me press any buttons other than the shutter but it was choosing random things to focus on. Turned it off, back on, nothing. Opened the battery compartment, nothing. I finally had to physically take the batteries out, (I have the grip) and keep them out for a good 30 seconds before it finally started working again. It was scary.

Hi heatherannphoto,

I'm sorry to hear your EOS R6 is still freezing with firmware 1.5.2. The first thing to check is to remove the battery grip and check to see if the camera is still freezing without it. If the issue continues try loading a different battery in the camera. If it keeps freezing try different memory cards. Finally if it keeps happening try attaching a different battery. Sometimes if one of those pieces of equipment is malfunctioning it can cause freezing like this. Swapping each of those pieces one by one can help narrow down which may be causing the issue. If the freezing keeps happening at that point we would recommend sending the camera in for repair. If you need to send it in for repair I included the steps to submit a repair request in my other reply on this page.

Are you using a Canon RF lens? If not, are you using one of the Canon mount adapters? If at all possible, try testing it using only Canon lens gear.

What brand, type, and capacity is your memory card? Beware of buying memory cards, camera batteries, and other small electronic camera accessories on sites like Amazon. Lots of counterfeit gear out there that does not work like it should.

The problem has happened with the ef-rf adaptor as well as with RF-lenses.

Now I usually use the newer LP-E6NH batteries with it. I do have half a dozen of them... so I will have to label them and track which one is in the camera at the time of failure. I don't use a battery grip as mentioned above. The only solution to fix the problem when it happens is to remove and re-insert the battery to get the camera funcational again.

I also use SD-Cards and have a dozen of them. Like the battery, I would have to track which cards are in the camera at time of failure and see if there is a pattern of a specifc card. They are all name-brand Lexar or Sandisk and some are 300/mbs and some are 170/mbs. Again... would have to track the card at time of failure.

The problem is very sporadic. I use the cameras mulitple times a week and the problem pops up about once a month.

I first noticed this same problem with my R6 about 6 weeks ago and it occasionally has happened since. It did it again today. I purchased the camera new from Robert's Camera in March 2022. Today I was taking a video of an insect and when I tried to stop recording the red REC light stayed lit however I was not recording. The camera became totally unresponsive. Even turning off the power button did not turn off the camera. Usually opening the battery door finally turns it off. I have an original Canon battery, latest firmware and a Canon RF 100-400 lens. Today I went online and discovered many are having the same issue. Canon you have a problem. Fix it or I take the camera back to Robert's and trade it in on another brand. I sold my Nikon Z6 and bought the R6. The Nikon did not track auto focus as well but it worked without issues for several years of heavy use.

Have been experiencing a lot of freezes - black monitor in viewfinder and / or lens error. Turning the camera of does not help. Taking the battery out does and everything gets back to normal.

I figure it's the servo / instant auto focus that confuses the camera / lens when it's hanging upside down on my hip (using a slide strap mounted to the bottom of the cam), but it's just a hunch.

could be a dji gimbal issue if it's plugged in?

I will repeat the comment that I posted prior to the comments by two others (who by the way should be posting their own threads - it gets very confusing dealing with multiple contributors) who may have different characteristics in their configuration and use of the cameras.

It is very important to keep the firmware up to date! The current version is 1.6.0 and that is the last in a series past 1.50.0 - that series included 1.5.1 and 1.5.2 - both of which included significant updates to focusing. So, if those of you having issues have not updated to FW version 1.6.0 you need to do so.
