EOS 40D locks up after taking a picture

Camera wakes up and works fine until I take a picture, then the red light stays on and playback, menu etc. doesn't work. Everything else still seems to work and I have tried everything from changing CF cards to changing the small battery inside the main battery compartment

Have you tried formatting the card in the camera?

There is only so much you can do that is cost-effective, given your camera was released in 2007. It is extremely unlikely that that it can be serviced if you cannot find an easy fix yourself, so you may have to consider getting a newer unit. There are many units to choose from and you may get a discount from going through Canon's trade-in program.
