The main dial on my 5D is no longer working properly: only every 3 or 4 turns does it do anything. Very frustrating when trying to select aperture.

Two questions:

1. Has anyone had the dial repaired through Canon, and what was the cost?

2. I could reassign the main dial function (aperture) to another button, but which one?

The only thing to do is to send it to Canon. They will examine it and give you an estimate for repair. We can't give you any meaningful amount since who knows how far Canon will need to go to repair it. Call 1 (800) 652-2666

Greetings ,

As far as button reassignment goes, the best option would probably be the main dial. However, this might keep you from adjusting shutter speed etc, easily in other situations.

Service requests. Please start by registering your product in your my Canon account. This will give you your support options. You can contact support, get an estimate and determine if the repair is something you want to pursue.

To be safe, I'd reset the camera to ensure its a physical malfunction.

Hope it works out for you 🙂

Don't know specifically about the 5D Mk IV, but Here's a story for you.....

I inherited a 50D, beautiful in every way but one...the Main Dial would turn without doing anything. Sometimes it "engaged", mostly not. I researched this, found lots of advice to replace the shutter button/Main dial unit. I was close to junking the camera, as DSLR disassembly isn't my thing and paying for repair didn't make sense to me. One more web search produced an article about how the 50D was prone to having the rubber "tire" on the Main Dial starting to slip, so the tire was turning but not the wheel. The fix was to carefully lift the tire with a toothpick in a couple of places and carefully place a small drop of glue under it. Very small, so it didn't ooze out from under the tire.

End result, the tire stopped slipping, the main Dial came back to life, and I've been using the 50D for years since. Works perfectly.

Sounds like a good solution, and I see many have done this successfully. However, the rubber 'tire' on my 5D isn't pliable and I can't get it to lift up to reveal the plastic wheel underneath. Guess it's over to Canon to deal with.

I know this is an older post, but one of my 5D MK IVs was having this same intermittent dial issue, sometimes adjusting shutter speed the opposite of dial direction. I sprayed some Electronic Parts cleaner in/around the dial and worked the dial in each direction while it was drying. It took a couple of applications, but seems to have completely fixed the issue. Many people seem to have this issue, so hopefully they'll find this.

That would not be my first choice of action and I will advise folks to not do that. Who knows if it worked or was a coincidence but spraying cleaner in an area you can't see in is not a good idea, IMHO, of course.
