Did it work before the firmware update? You say that you have live view shooting enabled in the menu? Also, put the camera in a creative zone setting (P Tv Av M).

The live view will not work on the LCD when still photo is selected. If I switch to video mode then the live view works and I can take pictures from there. When in camera mode the screen remains blank when I hit the Start/Stop button. The setting is enabled and I have done a firmware upgrade as well as reset all settings.

I believe this to be a hardware issue as the button does not work in video mode either to start recording.

Try resetting camera functions and custom functions back to default and see if that helps.

When you have hit the start/stop button have you tried prodding the INFO button to check if that helps?

FWIW, as an aside, if you are shooting stills (as opposed to video), conventional wisdom suggests that to get the maximum stability for the camera that you use the viewfinder with the camera to your eye to compose and shoot. By doing so you create three points of support for the camera as per the following:
The correct techniques

The trend to shoot stills via the LCD screen with arms extended has evolved from those transitioning from cell phones, but a camera is a lot heavier than a cell phone and the longer the focal length of the lens the heavier it becomes. Furthermore, the a longer lens will show the slightest camera shake, which is more likely considering that a camera held away from the body with only two points of support is an unstable support system.

Took camera back off and checked rubber stopper where the button is located. Took that off and clicked button a few times. Reseated cables and put back together. Works like normal now.
