Trevor,

I'm still going through the manual LOl. I know this is probably of topic for this forum, but I'm wondering if you could point me in the right direction regarding table top photography lighting set ups.

My backgrounds are coming out grey and my edges are not crisp. The whites and yellows seem flat.

I don't have pro lighting gear. I have a 50 watt soft box coming from the right at a slight downward angle.

I have a 10 watt neweer video light on the left which I have pointed at the back ground and also tried pointing at the left side of the product.

I've gone to manual with my camera at 1/60, F5.80 and 800 ISO ( although when writing that number I feel that it is way too high).

shot 1shot 2

SMH,

Okay I finally decided to go with the Canon SL3 and I'm running into something that is probably so basic it'll give the forum some chuckles.

I have the shooting mode turned to AV+.

After about 3-4 seconds after taking a picture the screen changes from the shot I just took to a new screen asking "apply effects after shooting?" How do I turn this function off so that I can keep the screen of the shot I just took?

Since your new to photography start out in Auto Mode (A+ Mode). No Canon camera has an Av+ Mode. Unless you mean Av Mode. Or you mean A+ Mode (Full Auto) Mode.

Hi Blair:

Welcome to the forum. It's nice to connect with a fellow Canuk!

It sounds like you have visual effects turned on. Suggest you refer to P146 of the Advanced User Guide. If you have not got that, here is a link: Advanced User Guide (c-wss.com)

Since you are new to this, it really is imperative that you spend a significant amount of time with the User Guide if you want to control your camera. Also, I strongly suggest you should watch the following video:
Canon SL3 Full Tutorial Training Overview | (Kiss 10, 200Dii) Video Manual - YouTube

Page 76 explains what your describing. Canon calls this "Creative Effects" this can be turned off. I highly suggest that you follow @Tronhard's advice. I'm from the instant gratification time too. But in order to learn your camera you need to read the manual too. I wouldn't know a whole lot stuff without reading it. Some settings may have different names between cameras. Even though there ALL made by Canon. Rebel SL3 Manual

Your camera is adverse to blown highlights. The camera mainly "sees" things as gray. With a lot of bright white. The camera will ALWAYS underexpose. The camera believes that it's too bright. So you'll need to dial in exposure compensation. Or if you're in manual mode overexpose the picture. You need to expose to the right. To get the correct exposure.

If you want bright white backgrounds, put the brighter light close to the background and use the dimmer light for the subject. You may need more than 2 lights to get even exposures across the whole background. It will take lots of trial and error, and you will master it quicker if you just use Manual mode.

That's why we have exposure compensation in Semi Automatic modes including Auto ISO in Manual Mode. Then you can overexpose in Manual Mode without using Auto ISO. Are you using continuous modeling lights. Or are you using soft box strobes. If you're using soft box strobes are they compatible with Canon's E-TTL flash system. Or are these manual strobe flashes where you set the flash power.

The Soft boxes are continual. I have a EL-100 flash on the camera but haven't tried that yet!

Have you experimented with speedlite photography yet. To see how your pictures will come out. Canon's E-TTL algorithm works differently depending on what mode your shooting in. In Full Automatic and other Semi Auto Modes. Flash is all treated as Fill Flash ONLY not main light. In Manual Mode flash is treated as main light NOT Fill Flash. In order to change flash settings this must be done in the speedlite control menu. Since the EL-100 lacks on speedlite controls. Newer higher end speedlites offer and LCD screen to change settings along with support for the speedlite control menu. Your camera is classified as a "Type A" camera and also supports E-TTL II. E-TTL II is a revised version of the original E-TTL algorithm that was released in 1995. There is NO such thing as an E-TTL II speedlite. All of Canon's EX or EL speedlites support both. Its the camera body that uses E-TTL or E-TTL II.
