5D mark IV focal points not displaying when taking picture

have been looking in the manual, looked online, even when i'm at the menu where you are supposed to turn it on, it won't let me. I select it where it says "off" but no option to turn it on. Please help!

What mode are you shooting in (M, Av, TV, P & Full Auto). By default the AF points are not displayed in the viewfinder. In (M, Av, TV & P) modes the users can constantly display the AF Points. Wether active points are shown or all of them are displayed constantly. Note that the 5D Mark IV has a firmware update available version 1.4.0 is the up to date firmware.

shooting in Manual mode, just got my camera back from Canon where it was "refurbished" if you will. I feel like i did something, but idk what... it did have it there and now it doesn't. it is all up to date. I will take it into the camera store tomorrow, but frustrated that what should be the solution, isn't working.

Check the shooting menu. There is a selection for AF Point display.

Take a picture of the choices the camera gives you in the forum. I have mine personally set to display all the time (Constant) option #2.

ok, so i went back to that very menu, had it all set like that, clicked on those options again, and now it's back... idk if there's a glitch?? agghh.... thank you for your help! seriously wonder if there's a glitch!

What firmware version are you on. Since you said that the camera was in for repair. Canon should've upgraded it to firmware version 1.4.0 already. Or is it still on 1.3.3 or 1.3.4 which are older firmware versions.

Arbitrarily advising someone to update FW is not good advice. Its great that Canon did it for you but FW upgrades only need to be done if you are experiencing a problem and the new FW fixes it. It it doesn't the FW will not make any difference.

FW 1.4.0 added enhanced security for transferring captured images to image.canon. That's all, so if you didn't use that feature FW 1.4.0 did nothing to your 5D Mk IV.

thanks for the info! Canon did the firmware update with all the other things they did. That was one thing i had never done, as well. So, i'm sure it was in need of an update. Crazy what all they fixed on my camera! But, now it's working great and hope to make it last a little longer... never knew there is a "life expectancy" on the mirror box and shutter! I love my 5D markIV and worth the money to fix. I'm sure i'll get to mirrorless someday, but for now i'm happy with it and all my lenses!

Your shutter is rated for for a certain amount of actuations but this is only an average.
I installed the same firmware on my camera an it also turned off the AF Point display too. This usually doesn't happen though.

on June 7, 2022, i got the shutter and mirror counts. The shot count was 292,536 and the Mirror count was 293,063. My firmware at that time was 1.2.1 Always learning...

That's interesting.... were you able to get it back on?

It is actually a rating more than an average. It is meant as measurement of how durable the shutter assembly in the camera is. An entry level Rebel like a T7 will have a shutter rating of say 50k, The D series may have a 100k rating. While 1 series an have a rating of 300k, It really has little to do with the average life of the shutter assembly. I have known of 1 series cameras with well over 500k on them and still going strong.

I have a good friend in the business with me that only bought used 1 series cameras. He would not even consider one that had less than 200k on it. He made a lot of money with them and spent a lot less money on them.

The reason I said "average" was because the camera maybe rated for 100k. But have more than 100k for instance 200k. So it's not a for sure way that your shutter will go out then. There are cameras rated for 100k but the shutter failed at 30k. Test cameras that Canon used had to exceed 100k shutter actuations. Before Canon said that the shutter was rated for such. Some of the cameras failed before 100k too.

Which is the definition of a "rating". Not an average. This is an indication of durability, really nothing more. As Canon does not warrant the camera to make, 100k again in your example, or they will replace it for instance. Just a number indicating how durable that particular shutter is.

You need to select "All (Constant)" to see the AF Points all the time.

You are conflating apples with oranges.

The “Blue” menus are the “Playback Menu” system. Those settings determine how images are played back on the rear screen. They have noting to do with the AF point display in the OVF.

I recommend setting “Magenta” menu you have displayed on the right to the top selection.

[EDIT] That same menu is indicating that you the AF Display disabled.
