What kind of camera? How close will you be to the action? Daytime or at night? How much are you willing to spend? Etc. Etc.

In my opinion the best football lens is the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 OS Sport.

Maybe not the best lens but certainly right up there is the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens. You really couldn't go wrong with it. Your question should better be asked as, What are the best lenses for taking football photos. 300mm might be just a tad short for football. Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens is better.

But none of this is of any meaning without know several other factors. Where are you able to shoot from? This is far more important. Depending on that a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens could work.

What camera? Day or night under the lights?
