18-55mm alternatives

Hello all,

my name is Theo. I am not much into photography but i do use a canon 450d with a canon kit lens 18-55mm that is very much useful for shooting eyewear for my online shops.

This is my second kit lens 18-55mm which has malfuctioned. Both lenses that i had been using after 1-2 years of use, stopped autofocusing.

The reason why i am happy with these lenses is that i do have the close up focusing distance that i need which is approximately 0.25m. These lenses have macro capabilities at 0.25m(0.8ft) The range is also very useful and i do not need any longer focal length.

Is there any alternative lens which i could use which is more durable? If yes can you please recommend a few?

Or i should purchase a third one and hope that it will last longer?

Any suggestions are more than welcome.

EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS

EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro

The 17-55 is so big that it casts a shadow in the coverage field of the built-in flash. But for the kind of work you're doing, you probably don't use the built-in flash anyway.

Theo,

There probably isn't anything wrong with you lens(es). Well there is but not the AF.

Try this:

Take the lens off of your camera.
Put the lens in MF mode.
Twist the FOCUS ring (the tip of the lens) all the way to one side (extend it). You may hear a click noise or two, this is good, but don't FORCE the lens.
Twist the FOCUS ring all the way to the opposite side (retract it). Again, you may hear a couple of clicking noises. What we hope is happening is the focusing motor being put back into its proper place.
Put the lens back on the camera.
Put the lens in AF mode.
Turn the camera on.
Put the camera in AUTO or P mode.
Take a test photo.
Does it work now?

I am a fan of the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens. You can't go wrong with it. A better choice might be the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon. A really nice lens.

I would not recommend the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for you.

I think you're making a good choice. Don't rule out an actual macro lens at a future date, though. They're amazingly sharp.
