I wouldn’t stand in the surf, but unless it is windy or raining you should not have an issues. If you have waves crashing against rocks sending spray into the air that is different. Stay beyond the spray. I take photos at a beach regularly and my gear does not get wet, even though it is weather sealed.

I'm going to be taking my R7 (weather sealed I believe) with my RF 100-400 and likely EFS 17-55 to the beach, hoping to photograph sand pipers/gulls/pelicans and some landscapes by the water, how should I protect my gear? Is a fly bag/rain cover enough? I know not to change lenses by sand/salt but wondering if this is just asking for trouble and I should go rent the EF 100-400 mkii and some short prime for landscapes

It is pretty easy to make a "raincoat" out of a plastic Ziploc bag. I have done it dozens of times. You see any situation where you are afraid to or don't use your gear for what you want or need, well, it makes having it at all is pretty useless. On the other hand finding out a way to use it and be successful is on you. Ziploc bag!
