24-105mm lens: Sand under the focus ring

Hey all, my friend gave me a 24-105mm AF and it seems to have sand under the focus ring. I believe her dad took the lens to Africa on a safari haha.

Anyways, the auto focus is smooth, though manual focus is a bit affected. How much do you think it would cost to clean if I sent it to Canon?

We need to know the full name of the lens first to see if Canon still services the lens. Canon has made multiple 24-105mm lenses that have autofocus. So simply saying “24-105mm AF lens” doesn’t really help. The complete name can be found when the lens cap is removed on the outer ring. I have an example picture below to help identify your lens.

A better course of action is to call Canon1 (800) 652-2666. We don't know anything but Canon will tell you everything.

How much it will cost or if it is still in service life can be found out there. Not here.

Although I suppose it is possible to get sand under the focus ring I think it unlikely. I have never heard of that happening which isn't important.. That's a pretty small gap. Call Canon.
