All good points. 👍 The good thing about Canon is that they will give you a quote or anticipated cost. Of course in situations like these they can't be 100% definitive until they actually inspect the lens. At that point, however, one can make an informed decision. I also agree that sometimes the cost of repair exceeds the cost to replace. @acoffey16, hoping the best for you. 🤞

Hello, my lens fell off of my camera body today and hit concrete from about 4' up. The lens cover shattered and when I put it back on the camera, it does show image when a photo is taken, but it is incredibly blurry. Like the lens itself has something smudged on it. I am trying to determine if it is worth it to send in or if I should explore a replacement.

If sending in, I found my nearest repair center and it is "Mail In Only" but what else do I need to include if I'm making a label to send in the lens? (Will they be able to find me by serial number, do I need to email someone my tracking. etc?)

Greetings,

We're very sorry to hear of this misfortune.

Before sending your lens off, I suggest you create and register it in your MyCanon account. You can also initiate a repair request there.

MyCanon https://share.google/AJ9kFvYeDSw4uyoVE

Make sure you package your lens well and insure it. If you have any other questions let us know.

Again, we're really sorry but rest assured Canon will take care of you.

From what you said, it fell on a concrete floor, I am not sure I would even consider a repair option. First you need to find out if Canon even still repairs that lens currently. Second, I think an average price for a good used ef 24-105mm F4 USM is $400 or less. If an element is broken it could exceed the worth of your lens. When you consider shipping, insurance and parts and labor you can quickly exceed $400 bucks.

About 10 years ago I dropped my ef 85mm f1.2L on the floor at McDonald's and it cost $385 to repair it because the front element had a crack in it. I am a Gold CPS member so shipping was not a big consideration and turn around was one week..
