RF75-300 F4-5.6: an L lens?

I was wondering if Cannon was looking at making the new RF75-300 F4-5.6 as a “L” F2.8 IS USM lens.

I do a lot of hockey shoots, and the lighting at some of the hockey rinks is not that good.

I currently use the EF70-200 F2.8 L IS III USM lens, would like to have just a little more reach.

The RF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 lens is based off of the old EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III lens. It uses the same slow AF motor and no IS. No to mention the older EF Mount versions were all poor optically. Then the aperture is too slow for low light.

Greetings,

The recently released (Canon Europe) RF version of the 75-300 is not an L series product. It has not been announced for the USA market at this time, and I don't expect that what we get here will be much different if and when that happens. So I wouldn't expect "L", IS or a constant f2.8. I think the whole idea was to create another super affordable entry-level RF option of a popular kit lens. You can put a 1.4x TC on your EF now, even adapted but that's going to put you at F4.

Now are there actual improvements to the lens compared to the previous EF Mount version. Probably not and it still doesn’t have IS and still retains the old Micro Motor AF motor system. That Canon retired years ago for STM.

"I was wondering if Cannon was looking at making the new RF75-300 <STRIKE>F4-5.6 as a</STRIKE> “L” F2.8 IS USM lens."

That would be a monumental task and result in a big ,very heavy, very expensive lens using current lens technology. Your closest option would be the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens. It has been discontinued so the used market is where to look but new ones can sometimes be found. expect to pay around $3000 for a mint or like new copy. It's a fantastic lens and, yes, it is a lens Canon should have made. It does have the big and very heavy and attributes stated above.

I sorta gotta agree with you, however, Canon makes more lens models and total lenses than any other lens manufacturer. And my always recommendation is to buy and use Canon brand lenses unless Canon doesn't make what you want or need. That is how I ended up with my Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens.
