That’s a really good point Rick! No plans to sell but you’re right… what if…
I’ll follow up after all. Your comment also made me realize that warping would not only affect actual value but also be potentially distracting to a subject trying to “look through the lens” so definitely parts only otherwise…
Thanks, John

Four’ish years usually on a tripod in a climate controlled studio. Maybe ten family trips. I’m guessing the warp ring is from a couple of days stored in a Pelican in the car on hot days but know idea. Functionality not affected and I have no idea whether over time (where I just noticed it). Anyone else had a similar experience and better explanation? Thanks in advance.

Hi Nucksea, that is really pretty odd, I've never seen that happen to a lens. I would agree that leaving it in the hot car is probably the culprit. It's great that it doesn't have any impact on the functionality of the lens.

It may be worth calling Canon support just to get some information and possible closure to how it occurred. They are a good group and would have vastly more information then we would on the forum.

Thanks Stephen. It’s interesting that my RF 70-200 2.8 has resided in the same Pelican with it and yet has no issues. Different materials I suppose. Further, I am quite certain there are a lot of owners whose lenses experience far more use - and far more extreme conditions - than my lenses. I’m surprised, therefore, to be the only cautionary tale with this experience. Thankfully, functionality is unaffected…

Hi Nucksea,

Sorry about your lens. I agree with Marc's advice. I'd initiate a repair request in your MyCanon account and see what Canon says. Getting a repair quote is free. It probably won't be inexpensive but I don't know about leaving it like that. If you ever tried to sell it, it would be a parts only lens.

" I'd initiate a repair request in your MyCanon account ..."

I would too but not for his reasons. When you get a lens ultra hot you displace the lube inside and that is a bad thing. So, I would get it repaired and Canon will re-lube it properly if need be.

Also a great point! Thanks for that. I have begun the process to ship it off but hadn’t considered that additional factor. The canon lens rep has never heard of this occurrence. I suppose I may be the sole cautionary tale after all…

Thanks to all for your time and advice. I hope it may help others as well - not the aftermath where this sucks but, at least as a reminder toward avoiding a similar issue.

Thanks again all.
