It is a Sigma AF DL Macro Super 70–300 mm f/4–5.6..I think it is the AF but it doesnt actually say on it. The only clue I have is the rear lens cap says on it...for Minolta AF but it might be a universal cap maybe. My question is how to identify the mount and will it be compatible with my Canon EOS 80D, and if not is there a adaptor to convert it. I have obviously tried to fit it on my Canon but it will not fit so an adaptor will be neccessary but which. I have uploaded some pics of it...any help appreciated

That lens is designed for Sony/ Minolta A Mount SLR cameras. The dead giveaway is not only the lens cap. But the mechanical aperture lever, 5 contact pins instead of 8 pins. Then the contact pins are at the top and support for Screwdrive AF. It’s not worth your time and effort to adapt Sony A Mount lenses to the Canon EF Mount. That Mount uses a lot of mechanical interfaces to communicate with the camera body. Where Canon EOS utilizes all electronic lens mount communication. Also you’d have no way to control the aperture. No autoexposure, No AF, No Auto Aperture control, No focus to infinity. Also glass is needed in the adapter for focusing to infinity. This degrades the image quality. So not worth the extra cost to do this.

Most off camera brand lenses especially older ones like yours are not worth the time nor money to adapt even if there is an adaptor made for them which I doubt there is in your case. If there does happen to be an adaptor it will likely cost more than that lens is worth. More bad news if you can find an adaptor and did decide to buy it, the IQ of the lens isn't the best either.

I understand what you are saying....but rather than just dump the lens which I would want to use in full manual mode for astrophotography.....I have found this with free returns...its only about £20 and if it is not suitable I can just return it....If you think the camera would not work with AT ALL in manual mode then I will bow to your obvious experience, which I dont have..but it just seems a shame to dump it if I could get some sort of use from it...

How are you going to control the aperture you can’t. Minolta dropped the aperture ring with the release of the A Mount system. Also the lens will never be in focus because both systems have different flange distances. Not to mention Canon EOS has a sensor inside the lens bayonet in the camera body. That tells the camera a lens is mounted. Cheap adapters like those won’t tell the camera there’s even a lens mounted. You’d be much better off using a native Sony A Mount DSLR. Or a Sony E Mount Mirrorless camera with an appropriate Sony LA-EA adapter to get full functionality out of the lens.
