I realize this is subjective but how much lateral movement should I see on the IS elements ?

Greetings AndreiA,

For the RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM lens, information on lateral movement for the image stabilization is not available but we can let you know that the lens does offer up to 5 stops of shake correction when the image stabilization is enabled.

I saw this a few days ago but just what the heck is "lateral movement"? Do you see a some movement in the VF? Is that what you mean by lateral movement because there is nothing on the outside of the lens I can think of.

For example had a Sigma lens that was so bad with its IS, or OS as Sigma calls it, that it would jump the subject completely off the VF screen. However it was faulty and Sigma repaired it.

On this type of lens and others from Canon, the IS group can float laterally by design when the lens is off the body. You can see that if you peek through the back of the lens- couple mm off axis.
How much that should be is the question that bugs me, especially when the lens has seen consistent usage.

Yeah, ok and yes there is the “floating” design but how much I have no idea. I know it may look weird to see since it is a new way of using IS. If the lens is working fine then I would not worry about it.
