Check and ensure that the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to AF. If it’s set to MF you’ll have to manually focus the lens. When set to AF the lens will focus. Does the lens even try to focus. It will make audible sounds while it’s autofocusing.

Of course make sure the AF/MF switch is set AF but when that isn't the cause try this.

Almost all out of focus (OOF) images are user caused. So, let's do a full camera reset. Consult your manual if you don't know how or come back and one of us will explain how. It's important to do the full reset back to default settings. Now on a nice sunny day set the camera to P mode. AF switch to AF. Set ISO to 200. Use One shot not Ai-servo or any in camera auto AF mode. WB to daylight. Now take a few dozen shots of lots of stuff perhaps in a park. People, buildings, animals, kids, etc., random stuff.

If all is well there isn't anything wrong with your gear. And, sorry to say, it was you.
