Dear Experts, I accidentally dropped my camera with the lens attached. Now, I'm discovering the auto focus is no longer working. Any idea how to fix it? Is it worth fixing? To repair, where can I send it to? Thank you.

What is the FULL NAME of the lens in question. Is this the original version or the version II.

I'm sorry for this misfortune. Do you normally carry your camera without a form of retention? Wrist strap, neck strap, sling or other?

This is going to be the takeaway for this camera or the next.

Start by registering your camera and lens in your MyCanon acct.

There you will be given your support options. If applicable, start a repair request. Provide as much details as possible. You will be provided an initial repair estimate. Package and ship your camera and lens if both were dropped.

It's Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8 USM L II. It came out the same year Canon release the 5Ds.

Manual focus still work and picture is still sharp. However, the autofocus does not work at all. Curious how much it would cost to fix it. Thank you

I take great care of my equipments. It was an accident the camera got dropped out of the storage bag and failed to the ground. The camera bag was on the couch when the camera fell out with the lens still attached.

The lens in question is Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8 L II USM. As stated, there is no physical damage to the lens that I can tell. Manual focusing works and picture is laser sharp. It's only the autofocus is not working. I know it's not the camera because autofocus is working on my other lenses. Thank you.

Have you checked the AF/MF Switch on the lens. Make sure its set to AF and look at the aperture set make sure it says a number like F/8. Not F/00 or F/-- this means the lens is NOT communicating with the camera. Also what camera are you using this lens on.

Yes. I can confirm the AF/MF switch is set to AF and the aperture is set to whatever aperture I selected. Even when in full auto mode, ISO automatically changes based on the lighting condition.

I am using Canon 5Ds.

Does the camera reflect the that the lens is set to AF by saying One Shot, AI Servo & AI Focus. Or does it say MF only on the camera. Have you tried both Live View and Viewfinder to see if it will AF.

Will it AF in live view or vice versa depending on which you're having the issue.

I like the way you're thinking. As you can see from the photo, Autofocus is also not working for live view. I have tried detach the lens from the camera and leave it off for a few mins. Nothing seems to help 😞

Does it AF with the viewfinder. Does the focus distance scale on the lens move when the lens tries to AF. Does the lens even try to AF at all.

No, AF is definitely not working for viewfinder and live view. There is no movement in the distance scale, the only time it move is when I manually focusing the lens.

You may have a broken Ring Type USM AF motor though usually they rarely fail. A Ring Type USM AF motor doesn't use gears to adjust focus like Micro Motor lenses do. Instead its two rings one is a rotor the other is a stator. When power is applied to the rotor it causes it to turn and adjust focus. The stator is a stationary part and doesn't move only the rotor moves.

I have tried all possible combinations. When connected to another lens, the autofocus work fine with a different lens. It's only this lens (EF 24-700mm F/2.8L II USM) where the autofocus is not working. And it's the lens that was attached to the camera when it felled out. Re the Ring Type USM AF motor, I assumed that can be repaired for fixed.

The lens will have to be repaired by Canon. Its unusual to hear a Ring Type USM motor go out. Get a quote first before going ahead with repairs. There's nothing much to a Ring Type USM AF motor to wrong like older lenses which use gears. The motor may have to be replaced. Please mark an answer as a solution too.

I have reached out to Canon and they quoted me $399 for the repair job OUCH! But what can I do. The lens is super sharp before the incident. Hopefully, I'll get many more years out of if still. Much appreciated your help and others. Cheers.
