Registering a gift lens possible?

Got a new 50mm 1.8 for my birthday. I don't have the receipt - but I was told it was purchased directly from Canon.

Is it possible to get this lens registered?

Greetings ,

Registration requires a model number, serial number and date of purchase. ff purchased directly from Canon they would have a record of the sale.

If you needed service, I'm not sure how you would go about providing proof of purchase. Go ahead and register your gift. You can call Canon and see if there's anything else you need to do.

Yep, ebiggs1 nailed it, call Canon and they will get you all set up. I had to reach out for Canon to register a 24-105mm my better half bought for me as a gift, it was so easy to get resolved. If you don't already have an account create one prior to making the call.

Thanks for joining the conversation, APK17! We know asking the purchase date of something you received as a gift can be awkward so we won't require you to do that. If you received the item as a gift and the exact purchase date is unknown, you can put down the date you were given the gift. For example, if you got it for your birthday or a major holiday this year, you can put that down as the date.

So here is the deal. I called Canon and the rep let me know that I can register the lens without a date of sale or without a receipt.

That's great and all, but he also let me know that if I need warranty service I'm SOL without the receipt. Either the person who gave the gift needs to give you a copy of the receipt -or- he said that that person could email in a copy of the receipt to Canon directly for the warranty work.

Indeed. This is why I mentioned this in my reply. Warranty for camera gear is 1 yr, but the warranty period can only be established with proof of purchase. Prices for new gear is consistent when purchasing from authorized dealers. You can run into sales but otherwise it's consistent. The gift giver shouldn't have a problem providing the receipt. The My Canon site also allows you to upload the receipt for safe keeping, so it's there if you ever need it. 🙂

Hrmm, maybe a different upbringing and attitude about gifts. I feel kind of skeezy asking for the receipt of a gift - even in this situation.

Maybe I am missing something but how would you propose that Canon confirm that the lenses was purchased by you, a friend or family member if you don't provide a receipt. How do they confirm that it is legally in your possession?

Proof of purchase agreements serve as evidence that a transaction has taken place between a buyer and seller, outlining the details of the sale including the items purchased, price, payment terms, and any other relevant conditions.

Are you suggesting that Canon should just take your word for it? That doesn't seem like a very realistic expectation.

I definitely didn’t say that. Canon sold the lens, they could improve their internal processes so that they could at least know that much.
that’d at least prove it wasn’t grey market. I could provide the name and address of the purchaser. There are ways.

@apk17. i was raised the same way. Asking for a receipt might be a social faux pas. I understand it, but you still need a receipt to establish warranty as you learned and Marc mentioned. 😉. Enjoy the lens! I'm sure it'll be great.

I get that Rick, many of us were raised with the same values. It was the gold standard!

I simply don't understand some of the thought process in the thread. Canon sold approximately 3.3 million camera units globally in 2023 (not counting individual lens sales) and the administrative responsibility for assisting consumers with proof of purchase would be enormous, that was my main thought on the topic.

That being said I will sit on the sidelines.

I doubt that. I don't remember them asking me what I paid for any gear. You did call Canon at 1 (800) 652-2666.

The thing Canon wants to know is whether the lens was bought new or used. The warranty only goes to the original owner. Your gifter can assist you without giving you the receipt if they simply register it in your name and Canon account. Especially if that person is a spouse or a parent or sibling. This isn't that difficult.

I, or any other half wit, in about 15 seconds can find out and know the price of a Canon 50mm lens.

Hey all!

It's really not that big of a deal.

Just register your lens with the information you have and the estimated date of purchase (you can even put your birthday since that's when you received it).

The chances of requiring service are extraordinarily slim, so you only need to provide the proof (invoice) if that happens.

Usually, when you purchase from Canon directly, our site will auto-register your products when you're logged into your Canon Account, so the proof of purchase is "built-in." Since this is/was a gift, that can't happen, so we need a way to verify it's within warranty if it requires service.
