Received my RF200-800mm f6.3-9 IS USM lens today at 1:25pm. It was a long weekend but the wait was worth it! 🤩

It will take a bit of bedding into, like anything.
One thing I wish I had done when I got mine was to put some gaffer tape around the end of the lens hood so that I can put it down on that without any fear of scratching the thing. It does show marks very easily.

The other things I wish I could change would be to:
Have a removable foot to the tripod mount (like the EF 100-400II) , as I shoot mostly hand-held and it can get in the way;
Have clicks for locating rotation at 90deg intervals as one rotates the body if mounted on a tripod
Have a Arca-Swiss compatible foot on the tripod mount.
I think the last two would not have been expensive to put in, given there are going to be tens of thousands of these out there, so the per-unit cost would be fairly miniscule.

I would be interested in your experiences! 🤔

Great idea Trevor,

I'll get a cover for the lense that will also protect the hood. I use Ulanzi Claw quick release plates to attach to a tripod or monopod. But I agree with you, the last two items would have been nice. I've got to ask one question; why choose a UV filter? The cameras have a UV filter on the sensor already, so the UV filter is not needed, would it not be better to have a plain "protection" filter?

Congratulations! You will enjoy it. I agree with Trevor's suggestions, they would be nice and would have been easy, but I'll live without them. I did find a nice arca style plate apparently designed for the lens, but it would have been nice not to need it.

It’s on Amazon, made by iShoot, never heard of company, but I’ve had other generic plates that were good, this one seems fine, I’ve used it a couple times so far with no problems.

I got mine Monday as well. Joe is way ahead of me. I haven't even opened mine yet. I got my CarePak email too. I'll get it open and test in a day or so.

I have a few tripods and have a bunch of generic 120mm plates. They work great. I use them as carry handles. I bought a Manfrotto Carbon tripod this summer. I like it a lot, but the mount is proprietary. So you are forced to use their plates. Grrr. 😠.. and of course it doesn't fit anything else.. gimbal, etc. I might buy another head for it. Guest bedroom is turning into a photo lab. Wife is like what does this do. Don't you already have one of these? 😊

I'm still waiting for someone to try and use my dry cabinet as a wine fridge. Luckily its got a lock. 🤣

If anyone has been on the fence about buying a dry cabinet, don't be. Its a great investment.

Hello p4pictures,

I didn't buy the UV filter to minimize ultra violet rays as mirrorless cameras do not need it with the "Sensor" technology. The main reasons why I went with the Hoya UV filter is to protect the lens. It is :

Antistatic coating repels dust
Scratch resistant - Hardened coating protects against everyday wear
Stain resistant - Protects against exposure to ink, markers, etc.
99.8% Light Transmission
Water repellent Water beads up and wipes away easily

I could of purchased a clear glass filter with out the aforementioned features but I decided on the one I bought because it is also made in Japan with Japanese glass. I know that if I drop the lens it will Not protect it or if I throw it at someone, it will not protect it. However, it might protect me! 😁

I too, agree with Trevor's suggestions. However, I can live without the plate as I mostly shoot handheld. But, I will buy that plate you suggested made by iShoot just in case I need it. 😀

You can actually cjange the QR system on a head, I did it on my old Induro, which also had a proprietary QR system. But you have to "break" the loctite seal on the screw without damaging the screw head. A new a new hear may be easier.

I agree about the dry cabinet, but mine is not big enough for this lens. I'll need to get a new one sometime, but after buying the new camera and lenswaterproof case, also a new tripod, head, and gimbal, I need to hold off a bit, maybe that can be a Christmas gift, lol.

You dog, I also have a Manfrotto tripod, they're the bomb! Carbon-fiber, strong as steel but light as a feather. Love my Manfrotto tripods 😃.

Hi Brian:

I agree with your comment about UV protection not being required for that alone. I want the environmental protection of a replaceable filter and where I live we get a lot of dust and salt in the air. For some reason, in this part of the world, finding a purely protect filter (as such) is both harder and more expensive that getting a UV0 filter. The ones I have are multi-coated and have Shott glass, so they are good quality. Not cheap, but cheaper than forking out for a front element.
All the photos I have shot for decades have had a protection/ UV0 filter on the front of the lens, so for my purposes I am happy with that arrangement.

Hey Joe,

HMB is just south of me. This part of the coast is riddled with beaches and marsh land. As you travel south towards HMB there are good beaches. Wavecrest, Redondo and Tunitas Creek. For birds, visit Pillar Point Marsh and/or Pescadero Marsh. These are a bird lovers paradise. Many species.

All of these beaches have unique features. Tidepools, sheer cliffs and rock features. Seals, and beautiful waves. At the beaches, you mostly get seagulls, but all of these beaches are feed by estuaries. Thats where the birds are.

I can make some restaurant recommendations too. From hole in the wall crab shack to the Ritz Carlton. We have it all here.

Your lucky Rick. I grew up in San Francisco and have lived in the SF Peninsula most of my life. I've been hanging around Halfmoon Bay and all the way down the California Coast to Pismo Beach and San Diego, on and off, as I have family up and down the California Coast. I've played at Ritz Carlton Golf Course and dined at their fine restaurant. I have been to most restaurants, like Moon Rakers, Pasta Moon, Mezza Luna, and La Costanera for good Peruvian seviche etc. I will try going to " Pillar Point Marsh and/or Pescadero Marsh. These are a bird lovers paradise. Many species" as you suggested.

Osprey, commonly known as Seahawks 🌊.. They're large fish eating raptors and are a great looking birds of prey. Great to shoot when diving and catching fish. They're 24 inches in length and 71 inches across. Their diet consists of mainly fish, its a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. They're usually found near water. 😃
