Micro Shaking in Servo Focus Sigma 24-105 f4 with R8 and Canon EF-RF Adapter

I am new to canon and sigma. My lens behaves weird when in Servo focus mode. The focus some how keeps on shaking instead of sticking. I have no issues with my 50mm Canon ef and 16mm Canon rf lens .

This issue occurs on all focal lengths, lighting conditions, hand held or on tripod.

I tried several setting change to fix issue but nothing works.

1. Tried turning off both lens stabilisation and camera stablisation.

2. Reseting camera settings.

3. Changing Preview AF to off

4. Turning full time electronic focus to OFF

Attached Video: I recorded this video indoors, continuous focus vibration can be heard coming from the lens.

Hi and welcome to the forum:

The use of 3rd party lenses is a challenge with the R series cameras, as they were not designed for Canon's more sophisticated systems. Canon have no control of those lenses, so I would recommend contacting Sigma to see what they can do; but in the meantime, have you tried turning off Servo mode?

I did not notice anything in the video. I must have missed it whatever it was.

Your Sigma lens is not the quietest lens out there. It makes noises as it focuses. The deign is at least a decade old. Check that it has the latest firmware.

I, too, recommend turning off Servo AF. But first, I would disable eye, animal, car, and everything else tracking. That lens is designed for a DSLR. Let the camera behave like a DSLR.

I have an EF lens with an E-RF adapter and I also had shaky autofocus until all I had to do was turn off my lens' stabilization.

I own several Sigma and EF lens that I use on my R series bodies with excellent results. Before moving to mirror-less I spoke to a Canon representative that was very helpful. Here are the highlights of our conversation.

If possible update the firmware on EF mount lenses. I had one Sigma lens that was giving me some focus issues (racking) and the update resolved the issue. This fix was a result of a conversation I had with Canon support.
When using a tripod or other support for the camera and lens turn off lens stabilization, IBIS if available still works.
Use only the Canon adapter. While he conveyed that almost all EF mount lenses, regardless of manufacturer will work the adapter is a critical junction and using the Canon adapter is the best solution.
The verbiage of most EF mount lenses. Older EF mount lenses, including Canon will most likely have challenges, he conveyed personally that 10 years is his cutoff. And I say that because this rep conveyed they use 3rd party on his R body.
Any 3rd party provider that was approved to manufacture lenses with the Canon EF mount was given the EF proprietary information for the mount. These third parties were expected to produce lenses that performed on Canon EF bodies. Tamron and Sigma did not reverse engineer lenses they were authorized by Canon. It's the same way Sigma is currently producing the RF mount.

If you call Canon support they will answer questions and assist you with the challenges you are having with strategic partners equipment.

Although always a good idea to have the latest FW, keep in mind not all lenses have the ability to update their FW. And, many of the older lenses that can be updated have to be done so by the manufacturer.

"If you call Canon support they will answer questions and assist you ...." Perhaps and perhaps not. I would not count on it. It isn't Canon responsibility to answer questions about the use of or how to use any off brand gear. They can not and should not be expected to know how all the possible equipment works on their cameras. If they do by chance that's a plus and kudos to Canon.

Well from personal experience I would say it is most likely in the perhaps category. I have also made the suggestion to other members in these forums that have had positive experiences with Canon support on both gray market products and 3rd party lenses. It is always worth the effort to try to contact support then to suggest Canon will not assist one of their customers.
