TS-E 17mm and Extender EF 1.4x not working on EOS R

Hi everyone. I have a problem trying to used mi Ts-e 17mm lens on a Canon R body (not RP). I been used this lens for a long time on a Canon 6D without any problems but in the Canon R I have the "f00" error message. I already tried the Canon R adaptor with seteable ring, the Canon adaptor without ring and a drop in filter Meike adaptor. In all the cases to verify that it is not a problem with the adapter, I have used other lenses (canon 50mm, 85mm, extender 1.4 and tokina 16-28) and they work well on both cameras but the extender 1.4 or the ts17mm doesn't work. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

"f00" or "f--" generally means that the camera can't communicate with the lens. This is commonly seen when using mechanical lenses, and in that case would not be a problem; just set "release shutter without lens" in the menu.

However, I think your lens has electronic aperture control (I don't know that lens), so this should not be happening. One thing would be to check the lens contacts, but you've taken care of that with all the adapters. Another would be to check that the camera's firmware is up to date (looks like 1.8.0 is the latest for the R). In general I would also check that the lens' firmware is up to date, but I don't see any firmware releases for that lens.

Otherwise, I can only suggest raising a support case with Canon.

Canon does NOT list compatibility with its teleconverters and TS-E lenses. They have electronic aperture control and are MF only.

It doesn't work because it is not designed to work with that lens. IMHO, I can not see any reason why you would even want to do that.

Did you mean adapters? The poster didn't mention teleconverters. The only statement I can find on the EF-R adapter says "allows EF and EF-S mount lenses to be used on Canon EOS R cameras, maintaining the same levels of performance and functionality seen on EOS DSLRs", which doesn't mention specific lenses.

This is the correct answer. The teleconverters are generally incompatible with lenses shorter than 200mm.

Sorry, I missed that. I was concentrating on the user's actual question, which is "I have a problem trying to used mi Ts-e 17mm lens on a Canon R body", and "I already tried the Canon R adaptor with seteable ring, the Canon adaptor without ring and a drop in filter Meike adaptor".

I don't see any legitimate reason why the Ts-e 17mm lens should not work on a Canon R body, with the appropriate adapter.

Hello everyone, first of all I appreciate your responses. I have been working with the Tilt shift 17mm lens for many years, I do architectural photography. Using a 1.4 extender is to turn that lens into almost a 24mm without losing tilt and shift capabilities. Even in terms of final image quality it is very similar to a 24 tilt shift. The problem is that when changing the body, switching to the R system (Canon R Body), I tried several mount adapters and none of them worked for me with either the 17mm TS or the Extender 1.4. Yes it worked with all the other lenses mentioned above. The curious fact is that before buying the last adapter, the store had an R8 to test and I brought my 17mm TS lens and it worked there, but when I returned home I tried it on the Canon R and it didn't work. I ask all this because I am considering selling the body R to buy something else, but I don't know if it is a problem with the Body or the lens. Thank you so much.

It should work adapted but I think that the teleconverter is incompatible with ALL TS-E lens.

Your TS-E 17mm is not communicating with the [camera], which is why you are seeing “F00” for an aperture value on your cameras. Your lens is in obvious need of service.

The third party RF-EF mount adapters are known sources of problems, which is probably why Canon forced those products off store shelves. Owners of the third party products were blaming Canon for their gear not working or being damages. Your lens may have fallen into the latter category.

You must not be using a Canon brand tel-con. I don't think they will bolt up to any of Canon's T&S lenses. However, that is something I have not nor would not ever do. "The third party RF-EF mount adapters are known sources of problems, ...", this is why most of us with decades of experience advise to not use off brand accessories.

Mostly batteries and grips but also true with te-cons.

This is straight from the manual. The TS-E 17mm F/4L IS NOT COMPATIBLE with any of Canon's teleconverters. All of their TS-E lenses are INCOMPATIBLE.

I tried 2 Canon brand mount adapters, one simple, the other with a customizable ring, and one with a Meike brand drop in filter. I don't think that's the problem.

I appreciate your response but I think you are focusing on the extender, and not on the problem itself between the lens and the body R. Regarding the extender 1.4 and the 17mm TS-E lens, I have been using it for 4 years without problems on my Canon 6D.

The manual for the lens clearly states that the combination you're trying to use. IS NOT compatible and you should not attempt to use it. Will the lens work without the teleconverter attached. Just with the Canon mount adapter and the TS-E lens.

Stop using the Meike brand mount adapter. It is one of those cheap, imported knock-offs that cause error messages and possibly even damage gear.

Like I said, Canon forced that gear off store shelves for good reason. I suggest that you put it in a drawer somewhere, and then forget where you put it.

Think again. It’s a problem. Your damaged lens speaks for itself. Listen to it.

[EDIT] There have not been any public statements from Canon as for the exact motive for enforcing their copyright. I can tell you this for certain. These forums were being flooded with users complaining about their gear not working.

In many cases, their new camera bodies were being damaged. I suspect Canon may have found itself in a warranty repair crisis, which is probably something you may not want to talk about in public.

I'm sorry, but you talk as if the problem was all with the Meike mount adapter and it was the third option to test the lens on the Canon EOS R because the other adapters manufactured by Canon do not work. I understand what you are saying, I take the suggestion about the meike brand but I insist that that is not the problem.
