Today, Canon says this is on backorder. What is the latest estimate when they will ship?

The rumor is that there is a supply chain problem in Japan.

Backorder means we've sold out of the amount anticipated to be available upon launch. We will continue manufacturing more and ship them as they come off the line.

as of Friday, Dec. 15th, retailers were surprised that their initial stocking orders did not arrive for this item. Others were surprised that our pre-orders did not ship.

It is a shame that Canon is not providing helpful guidance on this issue. I will proceed to find another gift to put under the tree.

Canon.UK is estimating ship date of January 4th. What do they know that Canon.USA doesn't?
