topic EF 100-400mm V2 stutter / jump issues in EF & RF Lenses

Hi,

My lens has been making a very strange and unnatural movement over the past few months, and it doesn't happen often but it happens enough now where I need to address it. I can't fully explain it well, so I have linked below a short sequence where it happens during some clips. Each time its happened I have been in the car, but can't imagine that would do much as the car wasn't moving either time. I took the lens into my local camera shop and they think its a stabilization issue but aren't 100 percent sure. I also realized I had my lens on mode 1 when I think it should have been on mode 2, so maybe that's all this is, but I have had it on 1 for a very long time and never had this issue.

I've noticed this happens on both a C70 and R6, which is why I don't think it's a camera problem. The effect looks almost like I am filming in one place and everything is good, until out of nowhere it's as if it jumps a few inches to the left or right. Thanks for any and all help!

Link to video examples it is happening in: https://youtu.be/day3TlYpuww

That looks like a problem with the lens IS motors. Does the lens do this when IS is turned off. Does it make unusual sounds. Also Canon has made 2 versions of this lens. Is this the original EF 100-400mm or the newer version 2 of the lens. Please post the full model of the lens.

Turn the IS off. Doesn't matter which lens it is. I doubt it has anything to do with the moving car. Your mode switches are basically panning and non-panning. You don't need the panning mode very often.

I have the newer version, version 2 of the lens. Thanks for clarifying that.

It doesn't make any unusual sounds and haven't noticed yet if it happens when stabilization is turned off because it only happens every once in awhile so I will need to keep testing with it off in order to know for sure. Thanks for the help!

This (link below by @Waddizzle ) has a good explanation of the IS modes on your lens. If panning in Mode 1 and following a moving object, then I would expect it might jump depending upon autofocus.

https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/EF-RF-Lenses/Canon-100-400mm-f-4-5-5-6-IS-USM-ii-lens-stabilization-modes/m-p/423876/highlight/true#M26655
