I have two R6 cameras and tried both with my ef 600mm f4 lens and it is not sharp... both work great with all my other EF lenses. Common problem? fixable?

Can you post some images in the forum with the metadata intact. Do you own the EF 600mm F/4L IS USM lens with (Image Stabilization) IS. Or is this the original EF 600mm F/4L USM lens that DOES NOT have IS. Is the camera missing focus all the time with that particular lens. What AF Operation are using One Shot, AI Focus or Servo AF. What Drive mode are you using Single, Continuous Low, Continuous High, Electronic ect.

The EF 600mm F/4L IS USM lens (released in 1999) was used according to the metadata. Did you use a 1.4x Teleconverter if so is it Canon or a 3rd party teleconverter. Which model the original, Mark II or Mark III. I noticed that you used a slow shutter speed of 1/400th sec. Your 2nd picture will show camera shake. You should be using 1/ focal length rule to prevent camera shake. But since a teleconverter is being used. You should be shooting at 1/1000th sec or faster to avoid camera shake. Were you on a tripod or not. Also can you provide a Raw file.

Was a Teleconverter used?

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Your shutter speed is too slow in the 2nd picture causing camera shake. Since your using a 1.4x teleconverter. You lost 1 stop of light. So you went from 600mm F/4 lens to an 840mm F/5.6 lens. IS can only help so much with older lenses. Your lens uses 1st gen IS technology. Also IBIS only can help so much in this case.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

why do you think shutter speed is too slow when unit is mounted on rock solid tripod? I consistently shoot 1/40th sec with my 500mm f4 and SAME 1.4 TC with tack sharp results.

Your 500mm F/4 lens maybe providing more stops of image stabilization. I don't know which 500mm F/4 lens you have. The 600mm F/4L IS USM can't provide the same level of IS. If the 500mm F/4 is a newer lens with a newer IS system. Due to the 600mm F/4L IS USM lens only having 2 stops of image stabilization. Certain features are LIMITED with older EF lenses.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I have a Canon EOS R6, EF600mm F/4L USM (non-IS, so I believe the initial 1980s version, very heavy lens), using a tripod w/Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Head. Lens is of course connected using the EF mount adapter.

I am able to get sharp photos, but all I've checked have F7 through F11, and shutter speed is 1/2000+ (the two I spot-checked are 1/3200). The attached pic of ducks was F7.1, 1/3200, ISO 8000, no extender.

One thing, depth of field w/this 600mm is immensely shallow, and even more so with the teleconverter. If subject eyes are sharp, the ground (or even parts of the subject) immediately behind and in front is blurry at F7 through F11. F6.3 (your pic) is likely more shallow... though you have a newer lens so maybe not the same experience.

I've captured some good photos and video with this lens but its not like all photos are handed to me on a silver platter.

Your lens with IS should allow for flexibility. I have heard of IS getting in the way for some action shots but the examples you posted were not seeming action shots. Light seems relatively low as well. Not being a professional, I would offer my vote re what others pointed out, your shutter speed sounds slow even for slight movement, and depth of field at F6.3 might produce blurry subjects if eyes are not focus point.

I get many more fuzzy shots than tack sharp shots... I must really ensure high shutter, sturdy mounting... in my case, I worry about wind since I do not have a top tripod... a good tripod but a little wobbly with strong wind when at max extension.

Below/attached you can see center duck is sharp, behind and in front are soft. Not saying it's a great photo but it makes the point, these ducks are close, I'm at a distance from the water, F7.1, but just behind and in front is soft.
