Since you already own the 70-300mm lens you don't need to upgrade your 18-135mm lens. The 70-300mm lens already covers part of that focal length. As @ebiggs1 pointed outed large zoom ratios are not so good. These lenses are usually variable aperture lenses. The more you zoom in the less light enters the camera. You will have to increase your shutter speed or ISO to account for this.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Thinking of swapping my Canon EF-S 18-135mm for something with a bit more zoom. Saw an article that recommended Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS or Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC for my 50D. Anything that makes one stand out over the other? Or other recommendations?

The way that the OP wrote the opening post. Sounded like they wanted to completely replace their current lens. The zoom ratio of the lenses mentioned above are way more than the 1/3 rule. That's why I asked more questions.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

You may want to look at adding a second lens to give you higher focal lengths. One disadvantage of zoom lenses with very high ranges is that image quality will be reduced.

Perhaps adding an EF 70-300mm would be a better choice.

No!

Any zoom lens that has a 10/1 zoom ratio has got to sacrifice IQ in order to be possible. If I am going to use a DSLR like the 50D, I want a decent quality lens. Otherwise I would just use an iphone. But it is all what you want and expect and if you are happy and satisfied with the photos more power to you. The choice between the two you are considering is a toss up. So buy the cheapest one or flip a coin.

I beg to differ. You can make your camera do anything and everything you want it to do with any lenses of your choice. I for one will always prefer using the zoom lenses. I own Canon t7 Canon 60d and my personal favorite I can afford the Canon 850d camera. I have been practicing and studying all of these cameras and the Canon lenses nifty fifty, yongnou 35mm, Canon 18-55mm 4-5.6 and the 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 , as well as the Canon 55-250mm and 70-300mm; but my favorite is the Canon 18-200mm EFS. I was having all kinds of problems with lighting even tried using flash and it was not to my satisfaction. So over the last for years of watching tutorials and studying many photography books I've finally gotten to understand what those four camera modes: M,AV, TV, and P. Yes I practice and study and play with my cameras all the time. I recently found out that if you finagle with the settings for picture style turning down the contrast has had a huge effect on my photos. I have also figured out that I can use all four of the camera modes to serve the kinds of photos I want to take. I realize each mode will serve my purpose of art in photography I prefer; which is just about all of them. Take a look at the photos taken of plants and buildings taken using camera settings where the camera contrast was turned down. Please be encouraged to play and learn your camera. I bid you happy shooting!😉
