topic EOS 90D Zoom Lens Recommendation in EF & RF Lenses

Hi all! I currently use a Canon 90D and mainly use my Canon 50mm and Sigma 18-35mm interchangeably. I find that the crop factor my 50mm gets too close for when I do self portraits/videography and the Sigma 18-35mm doesnt zoom in enough. What would be a good zoom lens that's a happy medium of these?

I've used my Canon 90D for about 2 years and the use of this lens would be for makeup indoor video content. I consider myself a beginner-intermediate with lenses and my budget is around but preferably lower than ~$1k

Hello mazar23 welcome to the forums. The Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM lens is a good choice.

-Demetrius

EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM & EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM

EOS 40D & 5D Mark IV

430EX III-RT & 600EX II-RT

"... mainly use my Canon 50mm and Sigma 18-35mm interchangeably."

Let me get this clear. You are needing a lens that is somewhere in the 36mm to 49mm range? You have the up to 35mm and 50mm covered already. It seems pretty odd to me that 13mm would make such a big difference as you can simply step back a foot or forward a foot or two.

"The Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM lens is a good choice.", is a good choice and I love it. But it isn't in the same class as the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens. Considering the OP also uses the very sharp EF 50mm f1.8. Knowing that and the OP is OK with a IQ hit, go for it. It certainly gets the missing 13mm back.

Tamron makes or they used to make the Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Lens. Very sharp lens! Sigma makes the Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens which is an extremely sharp lens. Canon makes or made the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens. I don't like it and don't recommend it but it is there. These cut into that missing 13mm.

As long as you have decent lighting available I'd look for a used EF 24-70mm f/4 L IS USM.

It's very sharp, well built, no vignetting on a 90D, and clean used copies are available for $400 - $500. It will cover your "ideal" FL range and more.
