Hi-

I have an old EF 17-85, which (when used) is giving warnings that "communication with the devices is faulty....", followed by a bunch of beeping. This is happening with both my 40D and when attached (via adapter) to my R6. I have cleaned the contacts.

Oddly, despite the warning and the beeping, the R6 still continues to properly expose the picture, complete with shooting data. Since the lens appears to be functioning okay on the R6, is there any way to disable that warning and beeping? I have to turn the camera off and on again to get rid of it.

Thanks, Olyduck

Hi, OP it sounds like the flex cable in your lens is beginning to fail. Which is causing both your cameras to show an error message. Also Canon has never made an EF 17-85mm lens. Did you mean the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F/4-5.6 IS USM lens which is an APS-C lens. Not a Full Frame lens so your R6 is applying a 1.6x for all pictures when this combination is used together.

-Demetrius

40D, 5D IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM

430EX III-RT, 600EX II-RT

Hi Demetrius-

Thanks for your note. Yes, I meant to say it was an EF-S lens. I realize it results in a 1.6 crop on the R6. I was testing it out, just in case I wanted to eventually pick up an R7 (APS-C) body. Not sure how involved or expensive it is to get the flex cable fixed or even if it would be worth it.

EF-S was a typo on my part. I meant to say the angle of view is different between a FF and an APS-C lens. When a 50mm lens is used on an APS-C camera. Such as 7D Mark II or the R7. The apparent angle of view is 80mm. Instead of 50mm on a Full Frame camera such as the 6D Mark II or R6. The lens didn't change but the angle of view did. The last post should've said an EF or RF lens is in 35mm equivalents and does not factor in the 1.6x crop factor when used on an APS-C camera.

-Demetrius

40D, 5D IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM

430EX III-RT, 600EX II-RT

The EF-S 17-85mm lens is a very old unit (released 2004), and almost certainly past its support date for a repair. It was superseded by the EF-S 15-85mm in 2009, to give you some idea of its age of that lens.

You can try calling Canon on 1-800-OK-CANON to try your luck, but the likelihood is that it will be declined and even if it was, it would be cheaper to buy a 15-85 which was a much better optic in any case.
