Spoke to Canon's tech support and found out that on the R5 camera, in the AF menu, the "Electronic full-time MF" has to be enabled. Which was not enabled on my camera. Problem quickly solved!

RF 100-500mm Manual Focusing with AF Engaged

When using the RF 100-500mm lens (attached to a R5), and the lens switch is in the AF position, can you also use the manual focusing ring to override the auto-focusing? The focusing ring does have any effect when the lens is switched to AF. When using my older EF 100-400mm lens, I can use the focus ring to override the auto-focus. Is this function not available on the RF 100-500mm lens? Or, am I not doing something or is the lens defective?

You should be able to use the focusing ring while the AF switch is set. The lens uses dual Nano-STM motors that are not connected to a gear mechanism, so there is no issue.

Ah, I thought you had done that already and was asking if this would cause an issue. Glad you got that sorted.
