Canon generally refuse to even clean a lens for which they cannot provide parts. This is reasonable, considering they don't know what they will find. This lens is really old and way past the service envelope now.

I can accept that this lens is beyond repair. Took a chance. Is there a better version of this lens to look for?

I have 24mm prime, 50mm prime, 100mm macro, and a 75 to 300 zoom lens for my Canon 5d2.

Did you look at the article and see newer lenses of that range? 28-80 is an old range in Canon's line. Newer offerings would make more sense.

I have an EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM that does a nice job. Made from 1997-2016. Plentiful on eBay, a bunch at MPB.com (a good used dealer). Reasonable-priced lens. More worthy of your 5D II than a 28-80.

Your lens is the first version of this specific model and is apparently the best - but is IS a very old lens. As Ernie wisely pointed out, it it not normal to oil a lens, which suggests this may have been done to avoid an issue of a mechanical fault in the lens. The oil will likely migrate to places it should not, if that has not happened already, so I would certainly approach the vendor with a 'please explain'! If that doesn't bear fruit, then claim a refund from eBay if you can.

If you are looking for a lens, a couple of questions:
1. What camera are you mounting it on?
2. Are you looking specifically for a vintage lens: i.e. very old or just a bargain?
3. What is your budget?
4. Is there specific focal range you are seeking?

Follow Ernie's advice above.. Return this lens. The oil haze part was your "red flag". My feeling is this would be something to avoid. (respectfully).

A 24~70 (best) or 24~105 (good) would be much better. Know that the 24~70 is sharper than the 105. If you are looking for a bargain, you will need to buy used as @normadel recommends.

Have you tried using the lens? What is the problem with the lens? I doubt you could return it because it is “as described”. “Visible Light Oil Haze Using Strong Light,” just means if you use a strong flashlight, you will see some oil haze on the glass elements. This is fairly common on vintage lenses. It will cause some softness or “glow” in direct lighting situations, but this can make for interesting photos with a vintage look. Use a hood and also add some contrast in post processing and it will probably give you great photos.

The correct lens hood for this lens is the EW-68A but the EW-68B will also work.

You would need a service manual in order to open up an EF lens. The user manual for Canon lenses is very basic.

Here is the EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 USM user manual.

I could return it as part of eBay return policy, however I think that's a **bleep** move. I'll invest in having it cleaned. There is visible oil on the lens, on the outside. I knew it wasn't perfect, but enjoy old lenses. Have had other "old" items cleaned, restored, and worked for years after.
