Until now I've only shot with the FD lenses so at first I wanted to ask about the aperture: Why does it only go from 4 to 5,6? My FD lenses go from at least 2.8 to 22. And my second question: If I bought a body for a Canon EOS 450d, could I use the EF lens?

The 4 and 5.6 values are the maximum (widest) aperture. This is a variable aperature zoom. Meaning that at a focal length of 35, the widest aperture is 4, but at a focal length of 80, the widest aperture is 5.6.

You can still stop the lens down to the smallest aperture allowed (I think f/32) for all focal lengths.
