Does anyone know what canon recommends?

I've been carrying 70-200s and similar size/weight lenses that way for many, many years, without even a hint of a problem. The bayonet mounts on the camera and lens are quite strong. I'm often shooting with two cameras, so one is hanging at my side while I'm working with the other. My most frequently used lenses include 70-200/2.8 and 300/4 that are close in size and weight, and one or the other is practically always on one of my cameras. Other lenses are 70-200/4 which is a little lighter, 24-70/2.8 and, smallest, 10-22mm (about the same as 17-40 on 5DII).

Really big, heavy lenses, such as my 300/2.8 and 500/4, have straps of their own that I use in conjunction with the camera strap.... when those lenses aren't on a tripod or monopod (and even then I often wind the strap around the 'pod as a bit of extra security). Those lenses have built in strap rings, so I'd say Canon "recommends" a bit more care and extra support with them.

Sorry Canon, but I don't use the OEM straps provided with the cameras. I replace them with Op/Tech, much like the ones Canon Professional Services provided at times. Those are much kinder to my shoulders and back!

***********
Alan Myers

San Jose, Calif., USA
"Walk softly and carry a big lens."
GEAR: 5DII, 7D(x2), 50D(x3), some other cameras, various lenses & accessories
FLICKR & PRINTROOM

Agreed but if Canon thought it was too heavy for the camera's strap they would either put lugs on the lens & recommend using them or recommend the tripod collar sling style. That said the choice is yours re what you like best or trust most.

You could go with a holster-style bag. The camera is better supported and is always at the ready. Probably a better solution than either traditional or sling-style straps.

It's not the strap that worries me. It's the lens mount. . By your logic it would be ok to let this lens dangle off a plastic mount Rebel. I don't think I would do that.
Even if you see no ill effects, a heavy enough lens can cause enough stress to throw a mount out of spec. I just thought that since this was a Canon site that maybe a Canon tech would know about this lens on a 6D or 5D.

I've never owned any of the Rebel bodies but I shoot radio control events & hang one or 2 bodies from their conventional straps for several hour a day, one body will have a 100-400 L IS, the other a 28-300 L IS or before that the old 35-350 L & before that a 70-200 f2.8 L IS. Bodies used have been 40D, 7D, 5D2, 1D2n, 1Ds2 & 1D4. To date no issues. Last fall I bought a 300 f2.8 L IS & it has strap lugs on the lens so I bought the strap & hang it that way.

I have a friend who enthusiastically recommends the Black Rapid strap. But read the reviews before you rush out and buy one. BR apears to have had some reliability problems which they may or may not have overcome. Also, some claim that it's very difficult to jockey the camera into position for a vertical shot.

If you can't stand to look like a clown, you probably shouldn't be a photographer. ;^)

Frankly I can't stand the Black Rapid straps and the others like it. I'd rather carry around a 70-200 2.8 by the lens all day than use one of those straps. Also, for those of you who do use them, be very careful if you're using one screwed into the tripod mount at the bottom of your camera. That mount was not made to carry a camera and lens around. It was meant to put the camera on a tripod.
